PITTSBURGH, PA- The University of Rochester women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Sunday to finish the two UAA round robin's with a 2-5 record over seven matches. The Yellowjackets will be seeded sixth at the UAA finals coming up in November.
Today, UR (17-8, 2-5 UAA) defeated NYU in three sets after falling to #12 ranked Chicago in straight sets during the first match of the day.
In the Chicago match, the Maroons looked to maintain their one loss record with a solid 25-16 win in the first set. The next two went to Chicago (19-6, 5-1 UAA), but the Yellowjackets refused to go down easily. Chicago won a long second set 30-28 and took the third in extra points 26-24.
Leading the way for UR was
Kelly Mulrey who had 9 kills, 13 digs and 3 blocks.
Meghan Neff had eight kills and four blocks.
Alma Guevara also had eight kills while
Sara Ribakove provided seven.
Lauren Bujnicki had 15 digs and
Jennie Ford dished out 32 assists.
Chicago's leaders were Katie Huntington (16 kills), Caroline Brander (12 kills) and Nikki DelZenero (44 assists).
In the NYU match, UR looked back to get to its winning ways after dropping three straight in Pittsburgh. The Yellowjackets took the match in three, looking good winning the first set 25-21. Then UR took the next two by identical 25-19 scores.
In that one, Ribakove had 11 kills, 8 digs and 3 aces for the Yellowjackets.
Emma Gira provided six kills and four blocks while Guevara had seven kills. Mulrey had five kills and nine digs while Bujnicki had 14 digs and Ford had 29 assists.
NYU was paced by Alex Mao who had 12 kills and seven digs. Nicole Frias had seven kills for the Violets (13-11, 1-6 UAA).
Chicago, along with Washington of St. Louis and Emory all finished round robin play with 6-1 records to pace the league. Case Western Reserve is fourth at 4-3. Carnegie Mellon and Rochester finished at 2-5 while Brandeis and NYU were both 1-6. The UAA finals are set to take place November 2-3 at Emory in Atlanta, GA.
Rochester's next match is a tilt against Nazareth on Wednesday evening when the five Yellowjacket seniors will be honored on senior day. The match is slated to start at 7 pm.
