Field Hockey Sets School Mark For Wins

The University of Rochester field hockey team earned its 300th all time victory and set a new school record for wins in a season after its 6-0 win over St. John Fisher Wednesday night.

UR used five first half goals to grab control of the game, and the defense held strong in the second half to keep the Cardinals (6-10) off the board and earn the teams fifth shutout of the year.

The Yellowjackets (14-4) got on the board first at 8:05 when freshman Michelle Relin fired a hard shot from the top of the circle that was deflected in off a Fisher defender.  St. John Fisher was credited with an own goal on the play.

UR answered with another goal four minutes later when Megan Keil found the back of the net from the right wing, four yards out.  Samantha Crandall picked up an assist on the play.

Relin notched a score of her own at 17:30 when she slid in a goal into the lower left corner of the net off a rebound and scramble in front of Fisher keeper Danielle Famolaro.

Captain Katie Flaschner got in on the scoring with her sixth goal of the season when she fired a hard blast from 15 yards out on the left wing with seven minutes left in the half.

Nicole Cerza tipped in a goal less than two minutes later when was camped in front and redirected a Relin shot from the top of the circle.  The goal was the freshman's second of the year.

At the half, the home 'Jackets led 5-0.

Fisher tried to mount a comeback early in the second half, but chances by Marissa Vedella and Alexis Zakala were thwarted by UR's second goalie, Tara Lamberti.  The second stop was a sprawling save on a hard shot from the top of the circle.  Lamberti finished with two saves.  UR starting goalie Madison Wagner picked up the win playing the first half, making one save.

Fisher's Zakala earned a defensive save when she prevented a Lindsey Randall goal off a penalty corner in the 53rd minute.  Zakala nearly got on the board for the Cardinals (6-10) when she got a shot past UR's third goalie, Mackenzie Sherwood.  But Corey Robinson was there for the Yellowjackets, making a defensive save and preserving the shutout.

Dixon was able to score her first of the year with 11 minutes remaining in the game when Maura O'Conor found her at the left post all alone.  The play was preceded by another Cardinal defensive save by Stacie Skidmore, but the rebound went to O'Conor who picked up an assist on Dixon's goal.

St. John Fisher was awarded a penalty stroke with nine minutes left in the game, but Sherwood made a nice blocker save on Elizabeth Cusack, keeping the shutout intact.

UR was playing without its top scorer in senior Shelby Hall.  The 14 wins on the year break the school mark of 13 set by Michelle Andre in 2006 and Wendy Andreatta in 2011.

Rochester next plays the College at Brockport on Saturday as the Yellowjacket seniors will be honored on senior day.
