DiBartolomeo Powers UR to HIA Title

The University of Rochester kept its hot shooting touch going en route to a 83-68 win over #22 Ohio Wesleyan University in the championship game of the UR Holiday Inn Airport Thanksgiving Invitational.

The Yellowjackets (5-0) were led by senior John DiBartolomeo who took home tournament MVP honors with 24 points and four assists in Sunday's win.  Classmate Rob Reid finished with 12 points and eight rebounds to also earn All-Tournament Team honors.

Ohio Wesleyan (3-1) was led by freshman reserve Claude Gray who ended with 18 points on 8-9 field goals.  Reuel Rogers poured in 10 points and grabbed three rebounds to be named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Battling Bishops started out strong on the defensive end with three big blocked shots in the first four minutes, but they started out cold on the offensive end hitting only three of their first 16 shots.  That poor shooting allowed UR to build an early 13 point lead at 20-7.

Ohio Wesleyan was able to battle back within five at 22-17 behind back to back threes from Gray and Anjuwon Spence.

After a timeout by the home 'Jackets, Tyler Seidman hit a long trey to help start a 7-0 run to build the lead back to double digits.  With two minutes remaining, the lead was 16 behind three point buckets from Kent Coyne and Nate Vernon.  At the half UR held a 37-24 lead.

In the second half, Reid was solid inside with six points in the first three minutes.  The Rochester lead ballooned to 22 after sophomore Kevin Sheehy hit a corner three pointer with 15:24 left in the game.

Two more three's from DiBartolomeo made the lead 26 with 11:30 left and UR wouldn't look back from there.  The Battling Bishops cut the deficit back under 20, but couldn't get the big run they needed to get back into the game as UR went on to an easy 15 point win.

DiBartolomeo had 20 of his 24 points in the second half, including going a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line.  Seidman finished with 13 points (5-5 FG) on 3-3 treys and dished out 3 assists.  Vernon ended with 10 points and eight rebounds.  As a team, UR shot 55% (30-55) and were 50% (10-20) from long range.  Sophomore Tyler Sankes chipped in 10 points for UR off the bench.

Ohio Wesleyan struggled from the floor early, but rebounded to finish the game shooting 47% (29-62).

The tournament MVP was DiBartolomeo with Reid, Rogers and Vaughn Spalding of OWU joining him on the All-Tournament Team.  Zach Bakenhaster of Otterbein and Jack Jeffres of SUNY Cobleskill represented the two teams in the consolation game.  Otterbein won that game by a 94-75 score.

Up next for the Yellowjackets will be the Wendy's Classic which starts for the men on Wednesday evening at Hobart.  UR will either play RIT or Hobart in the first round.
