Senior
Shelby Hall had a hat trick and freshman
Michelle Relin contributed three assists as the #18 ranked University of Rochester field hockey team breezed past Hartwick College 5-0 on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Hall scored her first goal of the game in the fourth minute, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Her other tallies came in the 15th and 41st minutes. Captain
Katie Flaschner scored a goal and had one assist while senior Sam Crandall recorded her first score of the year in the closing minutes.
The win stretches the Yellowjackets' record to a perfect 8-0 while Hartwick drops to 3-3.
In the fourth minute, Relin danced around the Hawk defense on the base line and lured Hartwick goalie Megan Campbell out of the net. After the keeper reached no-man's land, Relin passed the ball to Hall who was all alone in front for the tap in.
Later in the half, UR generated a flurry of chances which ended in Hall's second goal of the day. First,
Megan Keil fired a shot that was turned away by Campbell. After that, a Flaschner shot hit the post and careened right to Hall who was once again alone in front for the tap in goal.
UR held a 6-2 lead in shots and 7-0 advantage in penalty corners at the half, leading 2-0.
In the second half, Rochester got off to another quick start, as this time it was Flaschner notching her goal off another beautiful move along the baseline by Relin. She blew past the defender and chipped the ball in front to the captain who slid it into the net.
Relin looked to score for herself in at 40:10, but her shot was saved away by Hawk defender Holley Reynolds. But unfortunately for the Hawks, the defensive save found the stick of Hall who recorded her second hat trick of the season. The other came in a 7-2 win over Nazareth in early September.
With the score at 4-0, Hartwick then tried to apply some pressure offensively and turned that into numerous penalty corners. At one stretch, the Hawks had six corners in an eight minute span. They ended the game with a 12-9 advantage, but could not convert any chances past UR keeper
Madison Wagner. Wagner ended with four saves for her second straight shutout and third solo on the year.
Rochester finished off the game in style with a goal in the 65th minute when Crandall blasted a shot from the right wing into the back of the net. The assist went to freshman
Mary Bucklin.
Rochester's next matchup is with #19 ranked William Smith in a key Liberty League matchup for both teams. The game, being played in Geneva, NY, is on Saturday at 2 pm.
