GENEVA, NY – William Smith scored off a penalty corner with just over three minutes to play to snap a 1-1 tie and snatch a 2-1 field hockey victory over Rochester in a battle of nationally-ranked teams.
The Yellowjackets entered the match at 8-0, 1-0 in the Liberty League and ranked 18
th in Division III. William Smith was ranked 19
th. With the victory, the Herons are 6-1 overall, 1-0 in the Liberty League.
Annie Kietzman put William Smith ahead in the first half. Rochester tied the score at 49:32.
Shelby Hall put a hard ball into the center of the goalmouth and
Michelle Relin got a stick on it to tip it past Catherine Hare in the Heron cage.
The match stayed knotted at 1-1 until the closing minutes. William Smith won a penalty corner with 3:09 left on the clock. Margaret McConnell scored off the PC with Morgan Atanasio and Kietzman picking up the assists.
Madison Wagner made 12 saves in goal for Rochester. Hare had two saves. The Herons held a 21-5 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage on penalty corners.
