UR Wins Flower City; Beats Fredonia 6-0

ROCHESTER, NY- Sophomore Jack Thesing had a pair of goals and one assist to lead Rochester to an impressive 6-0 victory of Fredonia State in the UR Flower City Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon.

Rochester (2-0) took the tournament crown with two victories and bested its goal mark from the opening game where they beat Marywood University 5-0 on Friday.

Fredonia (0-2) got things started off quick with an excellent chance at a goal 15 minutes in.  Ryan Smith came charging in from the right wing and slid at a cross, but his attempt went just wide of the UR net and goalkeeper Mike Moranz.

The next good chance came at 24:38 at the Fredonia goal when Jake Seidlitz took a free kick after a FSU foul.  His attempt went right into the box where the sophomore Swanger headed it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.  For his stellar play as a UR back, Seidlitz took home tournament MVP honors.

Ten minutes later, senior defender Jake Cargill settled the ball and dribbled around the defense and got off a great shot, only to have it sail just wide of the net.  For his efforts in the Rochester backfield, Cargill was named the tournaments top defender.

Soon after, the sophomore Thesing recorded a goal by striking a hard shot into the top right corner of the net off a pass from freshman Jeff Fafinski.  Fafinski did a great job of battling in the corner with two Fredonia defenders to maintain possession.

Late in the half, Fafinski looked to notch a goal for himself, heading a hard shot at Fredonia keeper A.J. Grecco.  Grecco made the save to keep the score at 2-0 as the half ended.

UR got off to a blistering start in the second half with the junior Fan connecting in the first 30 seconds of the second half.  Sophomore Nick Pastore battled to the end line left of the goal and then fed Fan who was camped in front of the net for a tap-in goal.  It was his second of the season.

The Thesing-Fafinski duo would tack on another goal in the 65th minute when Thesing headed in a beautiful cross from Fafinski who notched his second assist of the day.  The goal was Thesing's third of the tournament.

Rochester put up another goal when sophomore Griffin Drake headed a pass from classmate Mark Lawlor past Grecco for a 5-0 lead.  Sophomore Ben Keeton also picked up an assist on the play by providing the entering pass to Lawlor.

Keeton then made it 6-0 for UR after scoring from the right wing about 20 yards out.  Thesing picked up his third point of the day by providing the assist.

The six goal output is the most for a Rochester team since they scored seven in a 7-1 victory over Brandeis in October of 2005.

For Rochester, Moranz made one save to earn the win.  Junior Alex Sandler played the last 30 minutes for Rochester to earn the combined shutout.  Grecco made XX stops for the Blue Devils.

In the earlier game of the day, Marywood bested St. John Fisher 1-0 to earn their first win on the young season.  The Cardinals drop to 1-1 after beating Fredonia on Friday.

Tournament MVP: Jakob Seidlitz (UR)
Offensive MVP: Stefan John (SJFC)
Defensive MVP: Jake Cargill (UR)

Up next for the Yellowjackets is a home contest against nationally ranked St. Lawrence on Friday September 7th at 7 pm.
