Ryan Grant slid home a goal off a scramble in front with 36 seconds to play to lead #9 St. Lawrence University to a 3-2 victory over #6 University of Rochester on Friday night at Fauver Stadium.
The goal capped a comeback that saw the Saints (3-0) come from a 2-0 deficit late in the second half.
It was an up tempo start to the game with
Max Fan generating the first good scoring chance for either side with some fancy footwork in the 9th minute. Soon after,
Shane Dobles made a spin move to get by the defense and found
Nick Pastore who fired a hard shot at St. Lawrence goalkeeper Nate Goss-Woliner. The SLU keeper held strong and turned the chance away.
Rochester (2-1) jumped out to a lead in the 20th minute when sophomore
Alex Swanger broke free on a breakaway. Just seconds later, as play was about to resume, lightning struck near the stadium causing an 88-minute weather delay, as there was severe weather in the area.
After play got back under way, neither team generated any offense for the rest of the half, with the Yellowjackets clinging to a 1-0 lead at the break.
Six minutes into the second half, Swanger broke free again and tapped it by Goss-Woliner for a 2-0 Yellowjacket lead.
St. Lawrence got on the board soon after when Goss-Woliner booted a goal kick 85 yards that took a big hop and found the foot of Sam DeMello near the UR goal. He won the jump ball and chipped it up over Rochester goalie
Scott Garfing's hands for a SLU goal.
DeMello nearly tied the score five minutes later when he hit the post with a hard shot in the 65th minute. Four minutes later, Seyefe Brouk nearly evened things up when he turned and fired a hard shot that rattled off the crossbar.
St. Lawrence really applied the pressure after that and was able to notch the equalizer in the 73rd minute when big man Alex Laird tapped in a loose ball in front off of a scramble.
With the score tied, that set the stage for a frantic run to the finish, and the two top 10 ranked squads did not disappoint with Grant scoring with under a minute to play. After an initial shot was blocked, Mark Provost of SLU was able to find the ball and feed Grant who slid towards the goal. He just got enough on it to slide it past Garfing who was diving for the ball.
In the goals, Goss-Woliner picked up his third win making three saves while Garfing dropped to 1-1 while making two stops.
St. Lawrence travels to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday while UR hosts Clarkson.
