Spikers Get 3-Set Sweep of RIT

HENRIETTA, NY- Behind eight kills from teammates Emma Gira and Savannah Benton, the University of Rochester swept cross town rival RIT Tuesday night, winning in three sets 25-16, 25-14, 25-18 at Clark Gymnasium.

Gira finished the night with an .800 attack percentage, getting her eight kills on only 10 attacks.  Benton ended with the eight kills, three digs and two blocks.  Meghan Connor added 14 digs on the night while Aimee Kohler added 13 assists.

The Yellowjackets (7-13) used 14 service aces compared to RIT's eight.  Ashley Hunter, Jennie Ford and Paige Idziur each ended with four each.

After falling behind early in the first set, the Yellowjackets used three straight aces from Hunter to surge ahead with seven straight points, jumping in front 9-5.  The Tigers (8-13) would try to get back into the set with three straight aces from Sara Martin, but UR's lead was too big and the visiting Yellowjackets would take the set 25-16.

In the second, the two teams would stay even through the first 14 points, but Rochester would then rush ahead with five kills from Gira in the set.  UR would also power to the 25-14 set win with four of its eight team blocks coming in the second.

The third set started off with a few RIT attack errors and an early 4-0 lead for UR.  The advantage would be stretched to 9-4 after two Ford aces.  Idziur would then get four straight aces of her own to balloon the set lead to 18-9 in the third before freshman Alex Goldman would end the match with a kill.  UR took the third set 25-18.

RIT's Sarah Szybist was the lone highlight for the Tigers, firing 12 kills.

The Yellowjackets next travel to Cleveland for the first Round Robin of UAA conference play on Saturday.
