UC Surprises #18 Rochester With 2-1 Win

CHICAGO, IL- The University of Chicago was able to capitalize on their chances and earned a 2-1 victory over the University of Rochester in men's soccer action on Friday night.

The Maroons (7-3-1, 2-1 UAA) only had eight shots and three on goal over the 90 minutes, but found the back of the net twice, once in each half to earn the victory.  The loss for Rochester (9-2-1, 2-1 UAA) was the teams first since a 1-0 defeat to St. Lawrence on September 6.

The Yellowjackets outshot Chicago 18-8 but were only able to get three shots on goal as the stingy Maroon defense forced nine shots wide and blocked six others.

UR's goal came in the 68th minute from junior Alex Swanger.  The goal, his sixth of the season came directly off a free kick after a Chicago yellow card.

Chicago's first goal came at 28:37 when Kyle Kurfirst scored his third of the season, beating UR goalie Mike Moranz.  The game winner came from UC's Georgies Voulgaris who tapped in a pass from teammate Brenton-Neal Desai in the 79th minute.

Rochester applied the pressure late looking to even the score, but the Yellowjackets couldn't cash in on any of the three corner kicks or two shots on goal in the last 10 minutes.  For the contest, UR held a 9-2 edge in corners.

In goal, Chicago's Brett Wiesen made two saves in the victory while Moranz made one save in the loss.  Rochester's Tyler Buck led all players with five total shots while teammate Shane Dobles had three.

The Yellowjackets look to rebound on Sunday when they travel south to St. Louis to take on Washington University at noon (11 am central).
