ST. LOUIS, MO- Junior
Alex Swanger scored just 52 seconds into the first overtime period to lift the #18 University of Rochester men's soccer team to a 2-1 UAA victory over Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon.
Swanger's goal came after he took a pass from freshman
Jeff Greblick and broke in on the defense striking a low shot from 20 yards out to the bottom right corner of the net.
The win is a nice rebound victory for the Yellowjackets (10-2-1, 3-1 UAA) who lost their first game in eight contests on Friday at Chicago. The loss drops Wash U. to 7-4-2 and 1-2-1 in the UAA.
Rochester was able to strike first in the match, going up 1-0 just 1:02 into the first half. There, junior
Keith Grafmeyer was able to head a free kick from Jeff Fafinski into the top right corner of the Bears net, past a sprawling David Wang.
The Yellowjackets were able to keep the Bears in check for the rest of the first half, holding Washington to four shots and only one corner in the first 45 minutes.
Rochester's Swanger nearly made the score 2-0 in the 81st minute when he beat his defender and fired a hard shot just high of the Wash U. net.
The UR defense then surrendered the tying goal one minute later when the Bears Jack Fisher cracked a left foot shot from 25 yards out, sending the game into overtime.
For the game, UR's
Mike Moranz ended up making season high seven saves after facing 12 total shots from Washington. Wang made four saves for the Bears. Rochester held a 15-12 advantage in total shots but the Bears earned four corners to the Yellowjackets three.
The win puts Rochester in a tie for 2nd place in the UAA standings behind only Emory who sits at 3-0-1 in conference play. The Eagles are UR's next conference opponent after a non-conference match against Kean University on Saturday.
