The University of Rochester men's soccer team used two late goals to break open a tight 1-0 game to earn a 3-0 victory over Kean University on Saturday night at Fauver Stadium.
Â
The Yellowjackets move to 11-2-1 on the year while the Cougars drop to 9-9-1.
Â
The home Yellowjackets were able to strike first in the 23rd minute when junior
Keith Grafmeyer headed in a corner kick from teammate Jeff Fafinski. The goal wasn't signaled right away by the linesman and was headed off the line by Cougar Steve Osores, but then it was ruled a goal after conformation that the ball had indeed crossed the line. The score was Grafmeyer's fourth of the seaon.
Â
The teams went to the break with a 1-0 score. UR held a 9-2 edge in shots and 5-1 lead in corners during the first 45 minutes. Three of UR's chances were on net while neither of the two early shots by Kean tested goalie
Mike Moranz.
Â
After a near miss on an offside early in the second half, both teams settled in and managed their opposition well, limited good scoring chances.
Â
UR tried to add to its lead with opportunities from
Alex Swanger and
Andrew Greenway with under 20 to play, but Kean goalie Tyler Callahan stood tall, making some tough saves.
Â
The Yellowjackets were then able to get a big insurance goal in the 84th minute when senior
Max Fan scored on a chipped header that just cleared the outstretched hands of Callahan. The goal was set up on a long through ball from the left wing by
Sean Daly.
Â
UR then was able to strike again three minutes later, scoring on a strong counter attack. Greenway rushed up the left sideline and swung a nice cross right to the foot of Swanger for his team high eighth of the season.
Â
For the game, Rochester outshot the Cougars 17-4 and earned eight corners to Kean's two. In goal, Moranz made one save while Callahan made five stops.
Â
The 'Jackets next game will be next Friday when they continue the UAA conference season against Emory at home before hosting Carnegie Mellon in the home season finale on Sunday.
