The #18 University of Rochester stopped a two-game losing streak in a big way Tuesday, powering past Elmira College 7-0 at Fauver Stadium.
Rochester (14-4) entered the game with back to back losses on the weekend to conference rivals Skidmore and St. Lawrence. The loss drops Elmira to 4-11 on the year.
The Yellowjackets were able to get on the board first at 3:52 when junior
Gina Cunningham tapped in a shot at the back post off a penalty corner shot from sophomore
Michelle Relin.
Relin then would boost the Yellowjacket lead to 3-0 with back to back goals 1:30 apart midway through the half. Her first displayed great stick work in front, deflecting in a hard shot from
Lindsey Randall while her second was a blast from the right wing off a penalty corner pass from
Megan Keil.
Senior captain
Katie Flaschner boosted the UR lead to 4-0 when her lifted ball from the top of the circle found the back of the cage just over the reach of Elmira keeper Lauren Thomas. The goal was Rochester's fourth of the game off a penalty corner.
Elmira's best chance to get on the board came in the 26th minute when they earned three straight close range shots, but two were saved by goalie
Madison Wagner while the third was swept away by defender
Kathryn Montgomery for her team leading seventh defensive save.
Cunningham broke through for her second of the day with eight minutes left in the period when she scooped in a rebound off a Randall shot, giving the Yellowjackets a 5-0 lead heading into halftime.
Just 80 seconds into the second half the senior Randall showed off some fancy footwork and scored her eighth of the year, weaving in and out of numerous Soaring Eagle defenders.
Randall nearly scored again with just under 15 minutes to go, but her shot off a PC was saved off the line by Elmira's Julia Derco.
Freshman
Natalie Drelles capped the scoring when she tallied her first collegiate goal at 56:46 giving the Yellowjackets a 7-0 advantage, tying the teams biggest scoring output on the season (9/4 vs Nazareth). Rochester has now beaten Elmira 10 straight games in the all-time series.
In goal, Wagner played the first 35 minutes and made two saves, earning her 12th win this season. Sophomore
Tara Lamberti played the second half and made three stops. Elmira's keeper Thomas made 16 saves on the day. UR outshot Elmira 41-10 and earned 18 corners to the Soaring Eagles seven. Both the shot and corner totals were season highs for Rochester.
UR finishes off its regular season against SUNY Geneseo on Saturday where the seniors on UR's squad will be honored pregame for their four years of work as members of the Yellowjacket field hockey program.
