WALTHAM, Mass – Rochester will play in tournament host Brandeis University for seventh place in the University Athletic Association women's volleyball championshs. The match will take place at 10 am on Saturday.
That pairing came after Rochester lost, 3-1, to the University of Chicago in the quarterfinal round on Friday. Rochester lost, 3-2, to fourth-seeded NYU in the consolation bracket on Friday evening. Brandeis lost, 3-1, to second-seeded Washington, then lost, 3-0, to sixth-seeded Case Western Reserve.
Chicago won the first two sets, 25-19, and 25-14. Rochester rallied for a 25-23 win in the third set, scoring the last four points of the set to pull it out. Chicago jumped ahead, 5-0, in the fourth set and won, 25-13.
Emma Gira led Rochester with 12 kills and added one service ace.
Jennie Ford and
Savannah Benton were next with seven kills each. Ford added nine digs and two assists. Benton had two digs, blocked two attacks, and added two service aces.
Xiaoyi Li had three kills, nine digs, and 32 assists.
Meghan Connor had 25 digs while
Paige Idziur had 13 digs.
Alexandra Goldman had three kills, two blocks, and two service aces.
The NYU match was filled with rallies by both teams. The Violets won, the first set, 25-23. Rochester evened it with a 25-21 win in the second set. NYU took a 2-1 lead after winning, 25-16, in the third set. Rochester won the fourth set, 25-17. The Violets won the fifth set, 15-13, battling back from an 8-2 deficit.
Benton recorded 24 kills, seven digs, two block solos, and two block assists. Goldman had seven kills, three block solos, and four block assists. Gira had 10 kills and two digs.
Ford had seven kills, 10 digs, and one ace. Connor had 44 digs. Li dished 49 assists and had 18 digs.
Ashley Hunter had six digs.
