The University of Rochester men's soccer team used four second half goals to power past Wilmington College of Ohio 5-1 in the season opening Flower City Classic on Friday night.
Â
Rochester (1-0-0) broke the 1-1 halftime score with two quick goals in a span of three minutes to surge ahead and leave the Quakers (0-1-0) in disbelief. The spurt came after Wilmington played very strong throughout the first 65 minutes of play, controlling the tempo for much of the early portion of the 2nd half.
Â
UR was able to break the tie at 69:05 when junior Alex Swanger slammed in a shot off a beautiful pass from the left endline from classmate Griffin Drake. Shortly after that tally, freshman Jeff Greblick, who scored the first UR goal of the night, just missed another score after making a nifty move to get past his defender.
Â
Drake would then tally his own goal at 71:59 when he broke in on a 4-on-3 odd man rush and was fed by junior Ben Keeton. Drake slid the ball past Wilmington's keeper Anton Niklasson and it had just enough steam on it to trickle into the net for a 3-1 lead.
Â
The junior Drake would then grab his third point of the night, second goal at 77:46 when the Yellowjackets showed great patience in the offensive zone. Junior Shane Dobles dribbled the ball into the left corner and the found junior Jarvis D'Souza in the middle of the field. After settling the ball and passing up a good scoring chance, D'Souza fed Drake who lofted a 25 yard shot over a hurdling Niklasson for a goal.
Â
Freshman Michael Cross would seal the deal with a goal with 3:19 to play when he slapped in a loose ball in the center of the field from 20 yards out. Cross and Greblick each recorded goals in what was their very first collegiate contest.
Â
The first half pace was a bit slow, with the teams feeling each other out until Greblick found the back of the net in the 35th minute. He tapped in a shot after a lofted pass from Andrew Sheridan on the right wing.
Â
Wilmington would nab the equalizer just before the half when Erik Hammer headed in a strong shot directly off a corner kick from teammate Nick Toney. That goal seemed to power the Quakers into the second half where they handled possession for much of the early part of the period.
Â
In the goals, senior Mike Moranz picked up the win for Rochester, making four saves. Niklasson made five stops for Wilmington, taking the loss.
Â
In the second wave of games in the Flower City Classic, Wilmington will be pitted against St. John Fisher on Sunday at 1 pm, while Rochester takes on Cazenovia in a 4 pm contest.
