Smith Scores 2 More, But Cortland Wins

GENEVA, N.Y.— Cortland's Samantha Gardner scored on a long-range free kick late in the second overtime to defeat Rochester, 3-2, in the consolation match of the 2013 Upstate Collegiate Cup played Sunday on Cozzens Field at William Smith College.

The Red Dragons improve to 2-2-1 overall, while the Yellowjackets are 3-3-0.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead at 13:18. Jessica Smith carried the ball into the zone, beat her defender and shot from the left corner of the box into the opposite corner of the goal.

Eighteen minutes later, Cortland tied the score. Rachel Parker's pass found Kelly Knight in the box and Knight shot from right in the middle of the box to equalize.

With 3:45 left in the first half, Cortland took a 2-1 lead. This time, Knight found Jessica McFadden who scored into the left corner of the goal.

Rochester found the equalizer with just over 19 minutes left in the second half. Rachel Honard slid a crossing pass from the left side of the field to Smith and she redirected it into the net.

Yellowjacket goalkeeper Allison Bernstein denied Cortland's Abby Williams on a breakaway with 11 minutes left in regulation.

With 4:13 left in the second overtime period, Gardner scored her gamewinner on a free kick from the middle of the field about 15 yards outside of the box.

Cortland held a 19-17 lead in shots. Rochester recorded a 3-2 lead in corners. Bernstein played the entire 105:47 in goal for the Yellowjackets and made eight saves. Taylor Hudson earned the win in goal for the Red Dragons. She made five saves.
