ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – It's an edict that every coach preaches: keep playing hard, good things will happen. Friday night they did happen to the University of Rochester women's volleyball team.
Rochester lost, 3-0, to host Elizabethtown in the Blue Jay Classic. The Yellowjackets didn't hit the ball well (.106) and E-town posted a 25-21, 25-14, 25-18 victory.
Game two was a completely different story. The Yellowjackets attacked well, hitting .355 in the fourth set to force a fifth set against 23rd-ranked Salisbury. Rochester won the fifth set, 19-17, to stun the Gulls, 3-2 (14-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 19-17).
Savannah Benton and Jennie Ford combined for 44 kills – 26 for Benton, 18 for Ford. Meghan O'Connor dug 29 attacks. Xiaoyi Li had 49 assists and eight digs. Paige Idziur had 16 digs.
Salisbury (13-2) led, 17-16, in the fifth set. Ford earned a kill to tie it. Then Li and Anna MacDonald blocked an attack for a point to put the Yellowjackets ahead. They won it on the next series when Salisbury commited an attack error.
In the E-town match, Benton had 11 kills. Ford and Emma Gira had seven kills apiece. Li had 26 assists. Connor had 11 digs. Idziur had 10 digs. Alexandra Goldman had four kills and three blocks. Rochester is 4-11 heading into Saturday's play.
