The University of Rochester men's soccer team kept its torrid scoring pace to start the season going on Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory over St. John Fisher College at Fauver Stadium.
Â
The Yellowjackets (6-1-1) have scored 31 goals in their first eight games of the season to rank among the countries leaders in offense. With their second straight 4-0 defeat, the Cardinals drop to 2-5-1 on the year.
Â
Rochester got on the board early with a goal from junior Shane Dobles at 6:18. He fired his shot into the left side of the net off a pass from the right side from classmate Ben Keeton.
Â
Keeton would get his own goal eight minutes later when he chipped a ball over Fisher goalkeeper Josh Klein. He was set up with a nice pass from junior Alex Swanger whose pass just cleared a Cardinal defender.
Â
Senior Max Fan nearly made it 3-0 halfway through the period but his hard shot on a 2-on-1 break skimmed just high over the crossbar.
Â
At 29:27, Fisher's Josh Tomko nearly beat Rochester keeper Mike Moranz for a Cardinal goal when his 25 yard turnaround shot was just tipped wide. On the ensuing corner, Cardinal Alex Stryker also had a good scoring chance, but his header flew just over the UR crossbar.
Â
Freshman Jeff Greblick got in on the scoring with six minutes left in the half, pushing a breakaway shot from 30 yards over a leaping Klein. The breakaway was set up when junior Jarvis D'Souza threaded a pass through the Cardinal defenders right to Greblick's foot. The tally was his fourth of the year, tying him with Dobles for the team lead.
Â
Keeton would get his second goal of the night in the 53rd minute when he headed in a shot directly off a corner kick from Dobles. The two goals were Keeton's first two tallies of the year.
Â
Fisher's best chance in the second half came courtesy of Joey Plummer when his free kick from 25 yards curled toward the top left corner of the net, only to have it saved by Moranz in his last action before being pulled for backup Michael Shatkin. Moranz finished with two saves on the night, picking up his sixth victory on the season. In the Fisher net, Klein made four saves.
Â
For the game, UR held a 17-3 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corners.
Â
Rochester's next game is Saturday when they play host to Lycoming College at 7 pm. Fisher's next game is when they host Utica in an Empire 8 contest on Saturday.
