POTSDAM, NY-The University of Rochester men's soccer team used a big first half to propel them past Clarkson University 7-0 in non-league soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
The seven goal outburst on Saturday was a strong rebound after Rochester got shutout 1-0 by St. Lawrence University on Friday evening for its first loss of the season.
The Yellowjackets (3-1-0) jumped on the Golden Knights (1-3-0) early, firing 13 shots in the first 15 minutes of play. Of the four that found its target during that span, only
Keith Grafmeyer's shot at 3:03 found the back of the net. His goal came on a point blank chance after two UR shots were blocked.
At 19:42, directly off a corner kick, the Clarkson keeper caught the Jeff Fafinski corner and backed into the net, giving UR a goal and a 2-0 lead. That score sparked another goal just 32 seconds later when
Alex Swanger took a long pass from
Shane Dobles on the right wing and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later, junior
Jarvis D'Souza then made it 4-0 when he fired a 30 yard shot into the top right corner of the net. The play started out at midfield where freshman
Jeff Greblick played a long ball through to D'Souza who did the rest of the work. At the half, Rochester outshot the Golden Knights 19-3 with an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. The 'Jackets also had nine corners in the half.
In the second half, Rochester kept the pressure on and quickly increased the lead to 6-0 less than five minutes in. Freshman
Michael Cross tallied both goals in the spurt, notching his 3rd and 4th goals of the season. The first came on a point blank header after a pass from Greblick, the second was a 15 yard shot off a left side cross from teammate
Nick Pastore.
The Yellowjackets would get a seventh goal of the day, this time with freshman
Zachary Kanaley earning to score when his shot deflected in off the Golden Knights defense. Greblick would pick up his third assist of the day and improve his point total to 10 on the year (3 G, 4 A).
In the net, three 'Jackets keepers,
Mike Moranz,
Alex Sandler and
Michael Shatkin combined to make three saves in the shutout. Rochester would outshoot Clarkson 26-5 on the day while holding an 12-3 edge in SOG and 13-1 lead in corner kicks.
With the win, Rochester continued its torrid scoring pace to start the season, scoring over four goals for the third time in four games. Through those four contests, UR has tallied 20 goals while only allowing two.
UR next plays at Hobart on September 14 at 2 pm.
