Rochester earned its first-ever win at William Smith College in field hockey on Friday night and with it, the Yellowjackets guaranteed themselves a home game in the Liberty League playoffs in early November.
The final score was 3-2 with Rochester scoring twice in the second half to rally from a 2-1 halftime deficit.
With the win, Rochester improved to 13-2 overall and finished 5-1 in Liberty League play. William Smith is 9-5 overall, 3-3 in the league. Vassar and Skidmore are both 3-1 in the league and finish the season against each other in a week. Rochester split with those teams – defeating Skidmore in overtime at Fauver Stadium and losing at Vassar on October 11.
If Vassar wins out (beats St. Lawrence and Skidmore on the road), the Brewers would earn the league's top seed based on a head-to-head win over Rochester. If Skidmore wins out (beats Union and Vassar at home), Skidmore would tie Rochester for the league title. The Yellowjackets would get the top seed based on the head-to-head win over Skidmore.
On Friday night, Michelle Relin put the Yellowjackets in front at 5:20 when she stole the ball and whistled it past WSC goaltender Catherine Hare. The Herons equalized at 15:15. Hannah Wood scored the goal off a penalty corner with Maura Moran assisting.
Ten minutes later, William Smith edged in front. Moran scored on a rebound at 25:47 and it stayed 2-1 through the end of the first half.
Callie Fisher scored the Yellowjacket equalizer at 48:35, knocking home a shot from in front. Claire Dickerson scored the gamewinner at 60:07 from a penalty corner with Megan Keil getting the assist.
William Smith pulled Hare from goal with 1:24 to play to increase their offensive pressure. Rochester's defense held firm. In the final minute, the Yellowjacket defenders blocked shots by Wood and Moran, the last with 0:09 remaining.
Tara Lamberti made a season's high 14 saves for Rochester to pick up the victory. Hare made two saves in 68:36.
William Smith had a commanding edge in shots, 32-7, and a 13-4 advantage on penalty corners.
Notes: Relin's goal was her 52
nd career goal and breaks the Rochester record of 51 set by Anna Dobrzynski (2008-11)… Rochester was 0-20 in Geneva against the Herons heading into the match.
