Chicago Slips By UR In Overtime

Nic Lopez slapped in a rebound off a Michael Choquette shot in the fourth minute of the first overtime period to lift the University of Chicago to a 1-0 win over the University of Rochester in men's soccer action on Friday night at Fauver Stadium.

The win keeps the Maroons (8-4-1, 2-0-1 UAA) in first play of the University Athletic Association standings while Rochester drops to 6-4-2 and 1-2 in the conference.

Just 30 seconds before the game-winning goal, Rochester's Alex Swanger was set up for a breakaway chance by senior classmate Nick Pastore, but UC keeper Hill Bonin stood tall and made the save.

Swanger nearly put the Yellowjackets on the board to start the game, heading a shot off the near post off a Jeff Fafinski corner kick in the fourth minute.  Keith Grafmeyer followed up with a hard shot that was blocked away.

Shatkin made a season high six saves.
Chicago's leading scorer Brenton Desai had a nice scoring opportunity in the 28th minute, but his header was saved by Rochester goalie Michael Shatkin.

Around the 32 minute mark, Rochester's Sean Daly headed a cross into the crease off a free kick looking for Swanger in front, but the two couldn't connect leaving the game scoreless.

The Maroons would grab momentum heading into halftime with two hard shots by Brad Bozych and Kyle Kurfirst, but one was saved while the other was sent high.

Chicago would get two good chances early in the 2nd half from Desai, the teams leading scorer, but he couldn't control the ball on either shot, sending them both high of the UR net.  Desai ended with a game high six shots.

At 65:17, Swanger would fire a hard strike at the Maroon goal, but keeper Bonin was there to make the save, keeping the game scoreless.  He finished with five saves in the game.

Shatkin would then make the save of the game with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, stopping UC's Nic Lopez on a point blank 1-on-1 shot in the crease.  For the game, Shatkin made a season high six saves.

Chicago held a 13-11 edge in shots on goal while each team was awarded two corner kicks.

Rochester looks to rebound on Sunday when the Yellowjackets host Washington-St. Louis in a game starting at 11 am.  Chicago looks to stay unbeaten in UAA play when they travel to Case Western Reserve.
