Visiting University of Chicago used two goals, one in each half to pick up a 2-0 win over the University of Rochester women's soccer team on Saturday night at Fauver Stadium.
Â
The Maroons (11-2, 2-1 UAA) got goals from Julia Ozello and Nicole Mullen in the victory, their second straight road victory in conference play. UR drops to 5-5-3, 1-2 in the UAA.
Â
Rochester would control the very early portion of the game, earning two corner kicks and a free kick in tight to the box, but UC's defense would hold the Yellowjackets off the board in the first five minutes.
Â
At the 16 minute mark, Chicago's Meghan Derken was set up on a long breakaway run by Mia Calamari, but her angle to the goal was cut off by Rochester goalie Aubrey Jaicks on a nice play, forcing the UC players shot just wide.
Â
The Maroons' Ozello would sneak a shot inside the left post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 36 minute mark. Mary Bittner picked up an assist on the play.
Â
At 62:55, Rochester freshman Laura Cowie-Haskell unleashed a long free kick shot that was caught right on the goal line by Chicago backup keeper Jacinda Reid. Mallory Morse started in net for the Maroons and made one save, picking up her 7th win of the season. Reid finished on stop as well.
Â
The Maroons nearly doubled the lead a minute and a half later when Kelsey Moore took a shot off a scramble in front of the UR net, but the Yellowjacket defense deflected the ball away.
Â
Again looking for some insurance with under 10 minutes to go, Chicago's Sara Kwan was stopped by a diving Jaicks in the UR net, keeping the score 1-0. The UR senior keeper finished with two saves on the night.
Â
Chicago would then get that elusive second goal in the 84th minute when Nicole Mullen headed in a lofted shot into the upper half of the net. The score came off a corner kick with Mia Calamari picking up the assist.
Â
For the contest, Chicago would outshoot UR 9-6 and also hold a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Rochester's next game is slated for Sunday when the Yellowjackets play host to #2 Washington-St. Louis while the Maroons travel to Case Western Reserve.
