Rochester's two leading scorers, junior Michelle Relin and sophomore Callie Fisher, combined for five goals as the University of Rochester field hockey team topped visiting Elmira College 6-1 on Wednesday evening at Fauver Stadium.
Â
The Yellowjackets (14-4), ranked #19 in the latest Division III coaches poll, jumped out to an early 4-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game and struck twice a minute a part in the final six minutes to top the Soaring Eagles (2-14).
Â
Fisher would open the scoring just two minutes into the game when she found wood on a breakaway after a long service pass from teammate Nicole Cerza. A minute and a half later, Relin blasted a shot past Elmira keeper Mikayla Rebusmen from 12 yards out in the center of the circle for a 2-0 lead.
Â
In the 8th minute, senior Gina Cunninham made the score 3-0 when she tipped in a hard entry pass from classmate Allison Resnick. The goal was Cunningham's 7th of the season.
Â
Relin tied her own single season record,
scoring her 19th goal of the year Wednesday.Three minutes later, Fisher would score her 2nd of the day and 10th of the season after she outran the Soaring Eagle defense and juked the keeper, making the score 4-0.
Â
Elmira would respond with a goal late in the first half from freshman Hollie Gravelle. She would beat UR keeper Gabrielle Cantley to a loose ball at the left post, just sneaking the ball into the cage. Atupele Machika who led Elmira with two shots picked up an assist on the play.
Â
With under six minutes to play in the contest, Relin would get goals 18 and 19 on the year less than a minute apart to boost the Yellowjacket lead to 6-1. The goal to put UR up 5-1 was a mirror image of her first goal, blasting a low shot from the center of the circle into the cage. Her third goal came on a hard shot from the left wing that was deflected to the upper part of the net off an Elmira defender's stick.
Â
The hat trick was Relin's fourth of her career and first this season. The 19 tallies this season moves the junior into a tie with herself for goals in a single season in Rochester field hockey history, matching the total of her freshman season in 2012.
Â
In goal, Tara Lamberti picked up the win, making one save for Rochester. Cantley also made one save while Kiran Sundaram played the entire second half and was not forced to make a stop. In the Elmira net, Rebusmen made nine saves while Julie Hockenberger turned away 12 shots in the second half. Julia Derco and Samantha James also made defensive saves for the visitors.
Â
The Yellowjackets combined to outshoot the Soaring Eagles 45-4 while also holding a 14-3 edge in penalty corners.
Â
Rochester concludes its regular season on Saturday with a 1 pm home game against SUNY Geneseo on what will be senior day as Resnick, Cunningham, Belle Hoagland and Megan Keil will be honored pregame for their four seasons of play on the Yellowjacket field hockey team.
