Two Tough Losses For 'Jackets at UAA's

SANFORD, FL- It was two heartbreaking defeats for the University of Rochester baseball team as the team dropped a 6-5 decision to Case Western Reserve and followed that up with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Brandeis on Tuesday afternoon at the UAA Championships.

In game one, Rochester (0-4, 0-4 UAA) surrendered two runs to Case in the bottom of the first but responded with a big top of the 4th inning, scoring five runs to get out to a 5-2 lead.

After a Josh Ludwig single and Dan Warren was hit by a pitch, Brendan Garry, Tyler DeClerck, Jake Meyerson and Will Conroy provided four straight RBI singles to snatch the lead.  A Brandon Heinrich RBI ground out completed the big five run frame.

The #24 ranked Spartans (8-1, 3-0 UAA) then were able to chip into the lead, scoring single runs in the 5th on a wild pitch and in the 7th on an Andrew Frey sac fly.

Case then was able to rally in the 9th inning off the UR bullpen.  Andrew Gronski led off with a single and was sacrificed to second and then was moved to third after a wild pitch.  Cain then stepped up and notched another RBI single scoring the tying run.  The next batter, Swisher, then singled to right moving Cain to third.  The attempted throw from right field to third base then got away and Cain scampered home for the Spartans second walk off win in three days at the UAA Championships.

For Rochester, Rob Mabee got the start going five innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 runs and 2 walks while striking out 5.  He also hit five Case batters.  Josh Schulman pitched 3 1/3 out of the bullpen and picked up the loss (0-1) after allowing 4 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) while walking 2 and fanning 1.

Brandeis (5-4, 1-2 UAA) got the win in game two scoring an unearned run in the top of the 7th inning off UR reliever Andrew Crean (0-1).  Rochester's Nolan Schultz had a great game in the loss, recording a career high four hits and driving in both of UR's runs.  Sophomore Lance Hamilton also added three hits in game two.

The Judges got the scoring started in the first inning off UR starter David Strandberg who was making his collegiate debut.  Tom McCarthy provided an RBI groundout and Kyle Brenner added a RBI double to put Brandeis up early.

Strandberg would settle down from there, not allowing another run the rest of his outing.  He went 5 2/3 innings, allowed 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks and struck out 1 before leaving in the 6th with a leg injury.  Crean pitched the remaining 3 1/3 for UR and scattered 4 hits and the one unearned run.

Schultz would respond for UR in the bottom of the 1st, providing an infield RBI single that scored Ethan Sander.  In the 3rd Schultz hit a long double to left field scoring Ludwig to even the score at 2-2.

Rochester continues the UAA championships tomorrow with a 5 pm game against Emory University.
