Emory Shuts Out UR in UAA Softball Opener



ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla - Emory University ran its record to 21-1, 3-0 in the University Athletic Association championships after posting a 6-0 victory over the University of Rochester on Tuesday afternoon. The Yellowjackets are 3-2 overall, 0-1 UAA.

The Eagles jumped ahead 4-0 in he first inning, all on unearned runs. With one out and one on, starting pitcher Brittany Grage commited a throwing error to keep the inning alive. Grage struck out cleanup hitter Hannah Sendel before yielding an RBI single to Tara Fallahee and a three-run home run to Micah Scharff.

Rochester had several chances to break through. With two outs in the seocnd, Laurel Muni walked and Cathleen Konopka ran for her. Eleni Wechsler singled (it was Rochester's sole hit) before pinch hitter Carli Carn-Saferstein struck out. In the third, Meghan Hennessy drew a one-out walk. She was forced at second on Tayler Fravel's groundout and Nina Korn struck out.

Muni drew a two-out walk in the fourth, but was caught stealing. Inthe sixth, Hennessy and Fravel drew walks. Emory pitcher Brittany File struck out two hitters before inducing Alyssa Murillo to bounce out.

Grage took the loss. In 2.1 innings, she gave up five hits, six runs (only one was earned), and struck out two. Wechsler relieved in the third. in 4.2 innings, she allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out one.

File struck out 15 and walked five along with the one hit to pick up her seventh win this season.
