ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla – Mother Nature made them wait an extra five and a half hours to play, and when they did, they needed extra innings. It paid off for the University of Rochester softall team, though, as the Yellowjackets pulled out a 10-6 victory over Brandeis University at the University Athletic Association Championships on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellowjackets were shut out by Case Western Reserve, 3-0, in Wednesday's second game. Rochester is 4-3 overall, 1-2 UAA heading into Thursday's action.
Rains in the Orlando area put a literal damper on baseball and softball, delaying start times. Rochester's original start time of 10 am vs. Brandeis was pushed back to 3:30 pm. The scheduled start of 12:30 vs. Case got underway at 6 pm.
Against Brandeis, the Yellowjackets connected for 15 hits with everyone in the starting lineup collecting at least one base hit.
Tayler Fravel was 3-for-4 with a clutch RBI in the four-run eighth.
Tiffany White had two hits as did Meg Hennessy and
Shelby Corning.
Brittany Grage had one hit – a two-run single in the eighth that snapped a 6-6 tie.
Alyssa Murillo clubbed a three-run home run in the third inning that helped Rochester jump in front, 6-3.
Eleni Wechsler picked up the win in relief. In three innings, she allowed three hits, one run (unearned), and struck out two. Brandeis (7-2 overall, 1-2 UAA) got to her for an unearned run in the sixth that tied the score at 6-6.
Rochester took advantage of Brandeis misplays to score eight unearned runs through the game. In the eighth inning, Wechsler singled and White bunted for a base hit to put two aboard. Hennessy's sac bunt advanced both runners. Corning lined out to right and
Nina Korn was walked intentionally to load the bases.
Grage singled through the left side to score Wechsler. When the ball was misplayed, White and Korn scored. Grage advanced to third and scored on Fravel's single.
In the Brandeis eighth, Wechsler allowed a leadoff single, then induced two groundouts and a popup to end it.
Versus Case, Rochester moved only two runners into scoring position in the first four innings. In the second, Murillo reached on a one-out single and Wechsler followed with a two-out single. In the fourth, with Case ahead, 1-0, Grage singled and
Tori Poplaski ran for her. Murillo hit a one-out single to move Poplaski to second. Laurel Muni flied out, moving Poplaski to third before Wechsler bounced out.
Case (8-3, 3-0) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Rochester put the first two aboard in the bottom of the fifth. White singled and Hennessy walked. White was picked off second base. Corning singled to put runners at first and second again. Korn bounced back to the mound, moving the runners ahead one base. Grage grounded out to end the inning.
Wechsler started and was saddled with the loss. In 4.2 innings, she gave up eight hits, three runs (two earned runs), and struck out two.
