Visiting St. Lawrence University swept the Liberty League opening doubleheader against the University of Rochester on Friday, winning by scores of 7-1 and 7-6 at UR's Towers Field.
The Saints (6-4, 2-0 Liberty League) got a stellar pitching performance from starter Joe Riley in game one, holding the Yellowjackets (2-8, 0-2 Liberty League) to just two hits and one run while striking out six in the seven inning affair. Riley is 3-0 on the young season.
Devin Robson led the Saints going 3-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs while Chris Fernandez also added two RBI. UR got its run on a
Josh Ludwig groundout after
Ethan Sander tripled to right field.
In game two, the Yellowjackets tried to mount a late game rally with runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but reliever Mike Dell'Olio shut the door in a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.
SLU got on the board first with three unearned runs in the first inning. Rochester responded with a 3-run inside-the-park home run from freshman
Brandon Heinrich in the fifth inning to tie the score.
Mic Regan provided an RBI single in the sixth for the Saints and then St. Lawrence plated three more runs in the seventh pushing the lead to 7-4. Regan finished game two going 3-3 with 2 RBI.
Rochester senior
Nate Mulberg reached on a Saints fielding error in the seventh, scoring two runs, and that was followed up by
Sam Slutsky doubling in pinch runner
Matt Todd in the eighth, trimming the SLU lead to one at 7-6.
Brian Munoz and Mulberg each finished with two hits for UR in game two.
The same two teams are at it again tomorrow, with another doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
