'Jackets Split First Two Games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Rochester split its first two games at the Dot Richardson National Training Center on Saturday. The Yellowjackets opened their 2014 campaign with a 5-1 victory over Manhattanville College. In game two, pinch-hitter Kyleah Brey hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to rally Heidelberg University past Rochester for an 8-5 win. The blast came a half-inning after the Yellowjackets  (1-1) scratched out the tying run in their half of the six.

On Sunday, the Yellowjackets play Rhode Island College, followed by a game against Transylvania. The University Athletic Association will play its 2014 championship in Altamonte Springs beginning on Tuesday.

Against Manhattanville, Brittany Grage threw a complete-game six hitter with six strikeouts and no walks to get the win. She was 2-for-3 with three RBIs - a two-run double in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth. The run she allowed was unearned. Nina Korn was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Rochester jumped ahead, 2-0, in the fourth. Meghan Hennessy singled and moved to second on a sac bunt from Shelby Corning. Korn reached on an error, putting runners at the corners. Grage doubled home two runs.

In the sixth, the Yellowjackets stretched their lead to 5-0. After Corning flied out, Korn doubled. Grage singled her home. Tayler Fravel singled and advanced all the way to third base on a throwing error by the Valiants' catcher. Grage scored for a 4-0 lead and Fravel scored on Alyssa Murillo's single.

In the Heidelberg game,  Grage hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. That tied the score at 2-2. Heidelberg took a 2-0 lead in the top of the inning on a two-run homer by Mikaela Mitsch. She doubled and homered in her first two at-bats, then was walked intentionally in a three-run Heidelberg fifth.

Three straight singles and a double error produced a pair of runs for Heidelberg in the fifth and left runners at first and second. Mitsch walked intentionally, but Jordan Hux followed with a fielder's choice that put Heidelberg ahead, 5-2.

Rochester scored two runs in its half of the fifth to pull within 5-4. Sarah Wayson singled to right. Pinch-runner Tori Popalski moved to second on Hennessy's groundout. Corning reached on an error with the runner holding. Korn doubled to left scoring both runners. Heidelberg pitcher Erin Chapman struck out Grage, walked  Fravel, then induced Lauren Muni to fly out to center.

In the sixth, Wayson reached on a two-out fielding error. Hennessy singled to left and Corning singled to right, loading the bases. Korn reached on an infield error as the tying run scored.

Eleni Wechsler went the first five innings. Ashley Amidon relieved in the sixth and was replaced by Grage after the pinch-hit HR in the seventh.
