ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Brittany Grage and
Eleni Wechsler threw complete game victories as Rochester swept a Liberty League softball doubleheader from Clarkson University, 8-0 and 6-1 at Southside Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets improved to 11-7 overall, 4-0 in the Liberty League. Clarkson, which is in its first year as a varsity sport, is 0-16, 0-4 Liberty League.
Grage spun a one-hitter, yielding a leadoff double to Jamie Bridge to start the game. She walked one and struck out nine. Only two other Clarkson players reached base – Morgan Tennyson in the top of the fifth and Bridge in the top of the sixth, both on Rochester errors.
Tirzah Smith took the loss for Clarkson. In 3.2 innings, she gave up two hits, four runs (three earned), walked two, and hit one.
Meghan Hennessy had two hits and two RBIs for Rochester. Grage,
Lauren Muni, and Wechsler each had two hits. Wechsler had a sac fly in the second. Muni doubled home a run in the fifth, and Grage doubled down the line in the sixth to score
Nina Korn and end the game on the mercy rule. The other three Rochester runs came as a result of a Clarkson error and two wild pitches – both of those in the sixth.
In the nitecap, Wechsler gave up three hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out eight to earn her sixth win of the season. The big blow offensively was a two-run home run by
Alyssa Murillo in the bottom of the fourth that snapped a 1-1 tie and turned the momentum back in favor of Rochester.
The Yellowjackets squeaked out a run in the first. With one down,. Hennessy singled, stole second and third, and scored on Korn's opposite field single to left.
Tiffany White doubled leading off the third and moved to third base on a wild pitch. She was stranded there as Bridge inducted an infield popup, a comebacker on a bunt, and a groundout to second.
Clarkson climbed back into the game in the fourth. Leanna Hoover reached on an error. With one down and Smith at bat, Hoover stole second, then third. Smith grounded back to Wechsler who looked her back to third, then threw to Korn for the second out. Hoover ran home, scoring when Korn's throw to the plate was in the dirt.
In the bottom of the fourth, bridge got two quick outs. Wechsler singled behind the mount. Murillo clouted the next pitch over the left field fence for her third home run of the season.
Rochester tacked on two more in the fifth.
Tayler Fravel doubled to left with one out. Hennessy singled to center to drive her in and when the ball was bobbled, Hennessy reached second. Korn singled up the middle to score her.
