Wechsler No-Hits Skidmore in DH Sweep

Rochester ran its softball winning streak to eight in a row as the Yellowjackets swept Skidmore College, 11-3, and 12-0, in a doubleheader at Southside Field on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Eleni Wechsler spun a five-inning no-hitter in the nitecap. It is the third no-hitter in softball's history. Kathy Gagne did it in 2002 vs. D'Youville and Brittany Grage did it vs. RIT in 2013.

The Yellowjackets improved to 13-7 overall, 6-0 in the Liberty League. The Thoroughbreds, who swept RIT with final at-bat rallies on Saturday, are 10-12 overall, 3-3 Liberty League.

Rochester accumulated 12 hits and seven walks in game one. The Yellowjackets jumped in front, 9-0, after four innings. Skidmore scored a pair of runs off Rochester's Sarah Wayson in the fifth, then added one more in the top of the sixth. Rochester scored twice in the sixth to end the game on the mercy rule.

In the nitecap, the Yellowjackets took advantage of 13 hits – all singles – plus six walks. Rochester put together a seven-run rally in the bottom of the second to take command. Six players had RBIs.

Wechsler walked three and struck out four.Grage picked up the game one win. In a total of 4.2 inings pitched, Grage allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out five. In 1.1 innings pitched, Wayson gave up five hits, three runs (two earned), and walked two.

Lauren Fortunato took the loss for Skidmore in the opener. She pitched the first three innings, then returned in the bottom of the fifth. In 4.2 inings, she allowed 11 hits, nine runs (five were earned), walked five, and struck out one. Lila Rosenfeld pitched one inning, yielding one hit, two walks, two earned runs and getting one strikeout.

Cassie Fishkin pitched all four innings for Skidmore in game two. She allowed 13 hits and walked six without getting a strikeout.

The DH was deemed Senior Day since it was the final Liberty League weekend at home for the Yellowjackets. They play at Union on Friday, at RPI on Saturday. Rochester closes its Liberty League regular season at RIT on April 26.

With that in mind, seniors Tayler Fravel, Meghan Hennessy, and Nina Korn all contributed. Fravel had six hits, two RBIs, and four runs scored in the two wins. Hennessy had four hits, scored four runs, and drove in two. Skidmore pitched around Korn – walking her seven times in the two games, three of those intentionally. She scored three runs.

Hennessy singled in Fravel in the bottom of the first in game one. She eventually scored the second run with a steal of home on a delay. Fravel's single in the second was misplayed for a two-base error and freshman Tiffany White came around to score.

Rochester sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four times in the bottom of the third. Lauren Muni's fly ball was dropped, bringing home Korn. Wechsler doubled in a run and sophomore Ashley Amidon hit a sac fly for a 6-0 lead. Hennessy's second hit of the game scored Wechsler for a 7-0 lead. The Yellowjackets added two runs in the fourth- both on illegal pitches.

Skidmore scored in the fifth. Brittany Osborn singled. Katie Amo walked and Rosenfeld dropped a single into right to load the bases. May-Lin McEvoy's infield grounder scored one run and Amo scored when the ball was thrown away. In the sixth, Osborn hit an RBI single to plate Mackenzie Whiting. Grage reentered. She gave up a single to Amo, then struck out Rosenfeld.

The Yellowjackets earned the mercy rule win in the sixth. With two runners aboard, Laurel Byrne-Cody bounced to the mound to advance them. White singled up the middle to end it.

Game two's outcome was decided in the second inning on seven hits and an intentional pass to Korn. Fravel had a two-run single and Alyssa Murillo hit a sac fly, one of two on the day for her. The Yellowjackets sent 12 hitters to the plate. In the third, they added four more runs – two hits, three walks, and another sac fly by Murillo.

Wechsler allowed only three base runners. She walked Lauren Gorstein with two down in the first, then walked McEvoy with one out in the third and Abby Shea with two outs in the same inning. She retired the last seven hitters she faced.

Skidmore hit two fly balls to the outfield. The first was by Whiting leading off the second inning and White raced over to make a diving catch. The second was a pop fly down the right field line, also caught by White.

Rochester will host Nazareth on Tuesday afternoon in its annual PINK game to raise money for the battle against cancer. The first game of the twinbill begins at 3 pm.
