TROY, NY- The University of Rochester softball split a Liberty League conference doubleheader with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday afternoon at RPI's Robson Field.
The Yellowjackets (14-8, 7-1 Liberty League) got the bats going in game one, winning 10-1 in five innings while the host Engineers (14-10, 4-2 Liberty League) rebounded with a 5-2 win in game two.
In the first game, UR got to RPI with five runs in the first inning. After a
Tayler Fravel single to center and walks to
Meghan Hennessy and
Nina Korn loaded the bases,
Brittany Grage provided a sac fly to center.
Eleni Wechsler then singled scoring Hennessy and that followed by a big 3-run homer by sophomore
Lauren Muni, giving UR a quick 5-0 lead.
In the fourth, Grage drew a bases loaded walk and then Wechsler stepped up and cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double to left center, pushing the Yellowjacket lead to 9-0 after four. In the fifth, Hennessy singled in
Stephanie Brunet making the score 10-0 in favor of visiting UR.
The host Engineers were able to break up the shutout, scoring one run in the fifth, but still fell victim to the mercy rule and lost by a 10-1 score. Grage picked up her seventh win for Rochester, tossing five innings allowing five hits, one run and one walk while striking out three. Kristina Weltzin was hit with the loss for RPI.
Wechsler finished the game going 2-4 with a run and four RBI while Fravel added two hits and two runs.
In game two, Rochester got on the board first again, scoring two runs on a fielding error and a Muni double to take a 2-0 lead.
Rensselaer responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on two UR errors and a passed ball. All four runs were unearned and charged to starter
Sarah Wayson picked up the loss.
The two runs in the first were all that Rochester would get in game two, as RPI pitcher Stephanie Caudle settled in. She picked up the complete game with allowing seven hits, two runs (1 earned) while striking out four and hitting a batter.
RPI was able to tack on another unearned run in the fifth on a Danielle Balestrini fielders choice.
Korn was UR's top performer in game two, going 3-4 with a run scored including two doubles.
Rochester travels to Union (NY) (14-8, 6-0 Liberty League) tomorrow for a showdown with the top two teams in the conference while RPI hosts RIT on Saturday.
