SCHENECTADY, N.Y. –
Nina Korn totaled five hits and five RBIs as they Yellowjackets split a Liberty League doubleheader at Union College on Saturday afternoon. Rochester took the opener, 8-1, and Union rallied to capture the nitecap, 8-3.
The split gives Rochester an 8-2 record (.800) in Liberty League play (15-9 overall). Union leads the LL standings on percentage points. The Dutchwomen are 7-1 (.875) in the league, 16-9 overall.
Next weekend's games will determine which four Liberty League teams advance to the post-season tournament on May 1-3 and which school will host. RPI will host Union on Saturday and host Clarkson on Sunday. RPI is 6-2. Union plays Skidmore College (4-4) on Sunday. Rochester finishes its league season with a doubleheader at RIT.
Brittany Grage picked up the victory in game one. She allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out seven to get her eighth win of the season. Rochester had 16 hits off Alyssa Wolejko. Seven of the eight runs were earned.
Korn and
Alyssa Murillo each had three hits and a two-run home run. Rochester scored two runs in each of the first three innings. Korn hit a two-run HR in the first. In the second inning, Grage doubled, moved to third on Murillo's single, and scored after a throwing error when Murillo stole second.
Shelby Corning singled home Murillo. In the third, Grage singled and Murillo homered.
Ashley Amidon added an RBI single in the seventh. Singles by
Tayler Fravel and Meg Hennessy loaded the bases. Korn brought home Amidon with a run-scoring groundout.
In game two, the Yellowjackets jumped ahead, 3-0. In the first, Korn doubled home Hennessy and scored on
Eleni Wechsler's single. Korn made it 3-0 with a solo HR to center in the third inning.
Union erupted for five runs in the third against Wechsler. Two singles and a fielding error with one out loaded the bases. Allyson Staats walked to force in the first run. Joanna Chalifoux hit a sac fly to cut the deficit to 3-2 and Camille Corbin followed with a three-run home run to make it 5-3 Union. Four of the five runs were unearned.
Rochester loaded the bases in the fourth – a leadoff single by
Tiffany White, followed by a one-out single by Hennessy. Korn reached on a fielder's choice with White thrown out at third. Wechsler singled to load the bases but Staats fanned
Lauren Muni to end the threat. Over the last three innings, Rochester's only baserunner was Hennessy who reached on an error.
Wechsler took the loss. In four innings, she allowed six hits, six runs (two earned), walked three, and struck out one. Grage pitched the last two innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) with one strikeout. Staats improved to 7-4 for Union. She scattered nine hits, gave up three earned runs, walked one, and struck out three.
