Masterful Pitching Sparks UR Past Ithaca



ITHACA, NY – Rochester pitchers Brittany Grage and Eleni Wechsler held Ithaca College to eight hits and no runs as the Yellowjackets swept a softball doubleheader over the Bombers, 3-0 and 7-0, on Sunday afternoon.
 
Both schools are ranked regionally by the NCAA Division III Softball Committee. Ithaca (19-11) is ranked second in the Northeast Region and Rochester (22-10) is ranked fourth.
 
Grage pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener. She issued one walk and struck out five. She doubled in the last Rochester run in the seventh inning. It is her 11th win this year against five losses. She lowered her ERA to 1.16.
 
Wechsler allowed five hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts, one shy of her career high, in game two. At the plate, she was 3-4 with one run scored. Her record is 11-3 and her ERA is 1.57.
 
Nina Korn had two singles and scored twice in the opener. In game two, she hit a three-run home run in the fifth to extend Rochester's lead to 5-0. It is her ninth home run this season.
 
Rochester threatened in the second and third innings in game one, then finally broke through with two runs in the fifth. Korn singled with two outs and Wechsler walked. Lauren Muni followed with a double to left that drove home both women.
 
In the seventh inning, Korn singled with one out. Wechsler fanned. Muni reached on a fielding error and Korn moved to second. Grage singled, scoring Korn.
 
On the mound, Grage straned Ithaca runners at the corners in the second inning and a runner at second in both the fourth and fifth innings.
 
In game two, Tayler Fravel was 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Wechsler was 3-4. Grage had two hits. Meg Hennessy had one hit and scored one run. Muni had one hit. Korn was 1-3 with a run scored and the three RBIs.
 
Rochester edged ahead with unearned runs in the second and third innings. Wechsler singled. Muni's grounder was misplayed, putting runners at first and second. Grage forced Muni at second with Wechsler crossing to third. She scored on Murillo's single.
 
Fravel reached on a fielder's choice in the third. Hennessy bunted her to second and Korn was intentionally walked. A wild pitch advanced both runners. When the ball was misplayed, Fravel scored for a 2-0 lead.
 
In the fifth, Fravel singled, Hennessy walked, and Korn hit a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for the 5-0 lead. Fravel doubled home Shelby Corning in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Wechsler and Muni singled. Grage doubled home Wechsler.
 
The Yellowjackets will be the second seed at the Liberty League Softball Championships starting Thursday at RPI. The Liberty League playoff champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
