CORTLAND, NY- The University of Rochester softball team used some late inning dramatics to sweep a doubleheader against SUNY Cortland on Wednesday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets (9-7) scored three times in the top of the 7th to take game one 3-1 and used a 2-run home run from senior
Nina Korn to win game two in eight innings.
Korn's homer in game two was her fourth of the season and 30th of her career at Rochester. She owns the UR career home run record. Freshman
Eleni Wechsler went the distance in game two, tossing all eight innings, allowing seven hits while striking out six batters.
In game one, Cortland (13-11) got on the board first in the 3rd inning when Alicia Hibbard reached on a fielding error allowing to Diane Cork scamper home for the 1-0 lead.
The 'Jackets were able to score three in the seventh to grab the lead, starting when pinch runner
Shelby Corning scored on an
Ashley Amidon pinch hit fielders choice. Two batters later, senior
Tayler Fravel singled in
Laurelle Byrne-Cody and
Cathleen Konopka giving the Yellowjackets the 3-1 lead.
Game two pitcher Wechsler came in after the Red Dragons got two runners on with one out in the bottom of the 7th. The freshman promptly picked up the save inducing a pop out and getting a strike out to end the game. She relieved starter
Brittany Grage who tossed 6.1 innings while scattering seven hits and striking out six along with giving up the one unearned run.
The wins against Cortland are the first doubleheader sweep in the history of the series between the schools. It also is the first victories for the Yellowjackets since 2009 over the Red Dragons.
The 'Jackets return home this weekend for conference doubleheaders against Clarkson and Skidmore on Saturday and Sunday.
