ONEONTA, N.Y. – For the second time in the last 11 calendar days, Rochester held its own against one of the highest-ranked teams in NCAA Division III men's soccer. The Yellowjackets battled the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta to a 0-0 tie through two overtimes on Tuesday evening.
Â
Oneonta moved up to third nationally in this week's poll of Division III. The tie makes the Red Dragons 5-0-1. Rochester, which moved back into the poll at #20, is 3-1-2 overall.
Â
Goalkeeper
Michael Shatkin and the Yellowjacket defenders posted their third straight shutout. Since a 3-2 home field win over then-#3 St. Lawrence, Rochester has tied Clarkson, 0-0, defeated Hobart, 2-0, and now tied Oneonta.
Â
Shatkin made four saves and Oneonta counterpart Vincent Pellegrino also made four stops. The Red Dragons came closest to getting on the scoreboard just 3:20 into the match when Hans Purtell hit the post on a header.
Â
With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Shatkin saved a header from Darren Gomes to keep it scoreless. Pellegrino prevented the Yellowjackets from snatching victory in the second OT when he saved a header by
Sean Daly with barely over six minutes to play.
Â
Statistically, Oneonta held a 14-7 edge on shots. Each team fired four shots on goal. Rochester accumulated eight corner kicks to three for Oneonta.
Â
The two teams were in the same NCAA pod in the playoffs last year at Fauver Stadium. Rochester defeated SUNYIT, 2-0. Oneonta, which sent waves of attackers on goal, was held scoreless and Oberlin College pulled out a 2-0 victory. Rochester defeated Oberlin the next night to advance to the Sweet 16.
Â
Rochester plays RIT at Sahlen's Stadium on Saturday at 7 pm in the Community Shield Match to benefit the Hillside Children's Center.
