Junior
Michelle Relin of the 20th-ranked University of Rochester field hockey team tallied two goals and an assist to lift the Yellowjackets to a 6-1 win over St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action on Friday evening at Fauver Stadium.
Â
With the five point output, Relin becomes Rochester field hockey's all-time leading point scorer with 116 career points (47 goals, 22 assists), breaking the mark set by Nancy Melvin in 1985. Melvin ended her career with 50 goals and 14 assists for 114 points.
Â
The win moves Rochester to 9-0 on the season (2-0 Liberty League), setting a new program best start to a season. That breaks the old UR record of 8-0 set by the 2012 team that reached the programs first NCAA Tournament. St. Lawrence drops to 3-5 (0-1 Liberty League) on the season.
Â
Team captain Keil tied a career high with
four points against St. Lawrence.Rochester controlled the early portion of the game firing a number of shots on St. Lawrence keeper Kim Haab in the opening minutes. Saint defender Carly Dziekan was forced to make a defensive save for SLU, keeping UR's
Sayaka Abe off the board in the 3rd minute.
Â
That chance was followed up less than a minute later when Relin opened up the scoring at 3:13 with her 10th of the year. The shot was a hard blast from the right wing to the low left corner of the cage.
Â
In the 15th minute, St. Lawrence got a breakaway along the right side from Erica French, but Rochester goalie
Tara Lamberti came out to meet the senior forward and break up the scoring opportunity.
Â
The Yellowjackets would answer, doubling the lead to 2-0 when
Claire Dickerson scooped in a rebound of a Relin shot from the point, recording her second of the year. With the assist, Relin tied the record for most points.
Â
Relin would then score the record breaker at 26:40 when she flipped a miss-hit ball from
Megan Keil past Haab for a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Saints would cut the lead to two, making it 3-1 at 31:46 when Maggie Wraight tapped in a loose ball at the far post. The goal was the SLU first year's 2nd of the season.
Â
But the Yellowjackets would answer, scoring a goal just 31 seconds later at 32:17 when Keil backhanded a lifted ball into the top left corner of the cage, sending UR into halftime with a 4-1 lead.
Â
Nearly nine minutes into the second half, the Rochester lead would increase to 5-1 when freshman
Olivia Denny deflected in a Keil backhanded shot for her first collegiate goal. Keil matched a career high in single game scoring, finishing with four points on a goal and two helpers, she ranks 10th all-time at UR in scoring with 68 total points.
Â
The Saints' Kara Pelosi displayed some nifty stickwork in the 46th minute, setting up two good scoring chances from in close, but both shots were turned away by backup UR keeper
Kiran Sundaram.
Â
Dickerson would net her second of the game for the Yellowjackets late in the 56th minute when she slid a ball past backup Saints keeper Julia Hudson into the right corner of the cage while camped at the right post. Sophomore
Callie Fisher picked up an assist on the play, setting up the goal with a pass from the center of the circle.
Â
Junior defender
Kathryn Montgomery made a defensive save for Rochester late after she slipped in behind the UR goaltender, turning away another goal scoring chance by SLU's Pelosi, preserving the 6-1 victory for the Yellowjackets.
Â
Overall, Lamberti played 35 minutes in goal and picked up her 9th win making two saves. Sundaram made two stops in 17 minutes of play and
Gabrielle Cantley finished off the last 18 minutes and made one save for UR. In the SLU cage, Haab made four stops while Hudson turned away one.
Â
Rochester avenged an upset by the Saints last year in Canton where St. Lawrence topped the Yellowjackets 3-1.
Â
The Liberty League conference season continues tomorrow for both teams, with Rochester hosting 7th ranked Skidmore and St. Lawrence traveling to #17 William Smith
