Volleyball Sweeps Day 2 at UR Invitational

The University of Rochester rebounded with a strong day two at the UR Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, going 2-0 in wins over Sage College and Elmira College at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Rochester (3-5) snapped a four match losing streak with two 3-0 victories on Saturday.  The Yellowjackets topped Sage 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21 before beating Elmira 26-24, 25-9 and 25-12.

Two players from Rochester were named to the All-Tournament Team, sophomore Nina Baek and senior Xiaoyi Li.

It was a tale of two days in the UR tournament, with Rochester hitting the ball much better on Saturday.  UR hit around .100 and struggled with errors on Friday and improved to hitting .189 against Sage and .200 against Elmira while committing half the errors in the two matches combined.

Freshman Shira Katz led UR with nine kills against the Gators (3-4) with Baek right behind with eight.  Jennie Ford and Emma Gira each added seven with Li dishing out 31 assists and adding 10 digs.  Ashley Hunter and Meghan Connor led in digs with 13 and 12 respectively.

Against Elmira, Katz was the only UR player in double figure kills with 11 but Baek and Li had two more great games as well.  Baek hit .467 (7 kills, 15 attempts) with five digs and Li had four kills, 31 assists and 10 digs.  Ford added 7 kills, 3 aces and 19 digs while Hunter chipped in 14 digs and 3 aces.

Penn St.-Behrend College took home the team title in the UR Invitational after going a perfect 4-0.  St. John Fisher finished 2-1 with four teams log-jammed at 2-2 for 3rd place.

The next UR match is slated for Friday Sept. 12 against Waynesburg at 6 pm as a part of the Frostburg St. Tournament.
