Freshman twin sisters McKenzie and Megan Runyan connected on the lone goal of the game, as the University of Rochester women's soccer team defeated the University of Chicago 1-0 in a UAA conference game at Fauver Stadium on Saturday evening.
McKenzie scored her team leading 3rd goal of the season at 52:40 while her sister Megan picked up the assist, her team leading 3rd of the season. McKenzie scored off of a free kick tapped pass from her sister about 18 yards out, striking the ball into the top right corner of the net.
The win pushes Rochester's record to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the UAA while Chicago snaps a three-match winning streak and falls to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Late in the game, Chicago was clearly trying to press offensively, leading to four offside calls in the final 20 minutes of the contest. At the 80 minute mark, Chicago's Hayley Thompson fired a shot from inside the box on the left wing, but UR keeper Madilynne Lee made a diving save, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard.
In the first half, Chicago would hold an 8-4 edge in shots, earning four of the best chances to break the scoreless tie. The Maroons also would dominate in corner kicks during the first 45 minutes, holding an 8-3 advantage.
In the 10th minute, UC's Kelsey Moore had her header shot sail high off an endline cross from teammate Mia Clamari. Six minutes later, Jenna McKinney walked in on the UR goal, but her shot at the near post was blocked away for a corner kick.
At 27:33, McKinney again had another chance, this time from the right wing, blocked away after she was set up by a long pass from Calamari. In the 34th minute, Madiori Spiker broke free on a breakaway off a through ball from Moore, but slid her shot just wide of the post.
With 10 minutes left in the first half, UR's Jean Chakmakas took a corner kick that looked like it was heading straight into the net, but Chicago defender Kaitlin Price was there at the back post to head the ball off the line and safely away.
Overall on the night, the Maroons held a 13-7 advantage in shots and 12-3 lead in corner kicks. Lee made four saves in the shutout for the Yellowjackets while Piper Mik made one save for Chicago.
Rochester will now embark on a four-game road trip that begins next Friday at Carnegie Mellon University while the Maroons continue their road trip with a visit to Brandeis next Friday.
