'Jackets Win 4th Straight, Improve to 14-4

HOUGHTON, NY - The University of Rochester field hockey team won its fourth straight game with a 3-0 victory over Houghton College on Wednesday evening at Burke Field.

Rochester improves to 14-4 with the victory while Houghton falls to 8-8 on the season.

The Yellowjackets got two first half goals and a third in the final minute of the contest for the win.

UR mounted a strong offensive push in the opening minutes of the game, earning three penalty corners and swatting seven other shots in the opening 10 minutes.  Houghton keeper Elizabeth Piszker stood tall though, turning away the five shots that were on net.

At 13:47, Olivia Denny opened the scoring after a pass from teammate Callie Fisher.  It was Denny's fifth goal of the season, ranking her fourth on the Yellowjackets.

Fisher had a goal and an assist Wednesday.

Houghton's best scoring chance came around the 25 minute mark.  Then, the Highlanders earned two shots and two penalty corners over a 1:30 span.  That spurt ended up being half of the teams penalty corners and a third of their total shots in the contest.

In the 28th minute, Claire Dickerson tipped in a Sayaka Abe pass from outside the circle shortly after a penalty corner to double the Yellowjacket lead heading to halftime.

In the second half, Rochester's Fisher nearly made it 3-0 in the opening minute, but Houghton's Grace Lee made a defensive save to keep Houghton within striking distance.

The score would remain 2-0 through the 65th minute when Houghton earned its best scoring chance of the half.  After a penalty corner, Houghton's Marissa Holligner picked up a loose ball and tried to slip the ball past Rochester goalkeeper Tara Lamberti.  Hollinger's shot was swung just wide of the post and UR remained up 2-0.

In the final minute of the game, Fisher scored her 7th goal of the season for Rochester, lifting a ball over the outstretched stick of Piszker in the Houghton cage.  Teammate Tiffany White picked up an assist on the play after controlling penalty corner duties.

Overall, Rochester's Lamberti made three saves and picked up her eighth solo shutout of the season, matching a single season record set by Pamela Sheffield in 2002.  It was the 21st shutout the senior has been a part of in her career, setting a new school record.  In the Houghton net, Piszker made seven stops.

Rochester closes out the regular season this Saturday at SUNY Geneseo in a contest that starts at 11 am.  UR will then host a Liberty League tournament semifinal match next Wednesday at 7 pm against Skidmore College.
