14 Aces Help Guide Rochester To A 3-1 Win

BUFFALO, N.Y. – On Senior Day a week ago in the Palestra, the women's volleyball team used its strong defense – and produced 14 blocks – to grab a four-set win over Elmira College. On Tuesday night at Buffalo State College, the Yellowjackets were offensive-minded. They compiled 14 service aces and defeated the Bengals in four sets.

With a result of 18-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-14, Rochester improved to 14-13 as it prepares to compete in the New York Regional Championships this weekend at Nazareth College. And a week later, the University Athletic Association championships come to town – literally. Rochester will host the UAA event on November 6-7 in the Louis Alexander Palestra. The loss dropped BSC's record to 10-17.

Seven players had aces for Rochester. Emma Gira had four, Jennie Ford added three. Audrey Goldfarb and Meghan Connor had two each. Courtney Vidovich, Ashley Hunter, and Aimee Kohler contributed one apiece.

Ford led the attack with 18 kills. Alexandra Nelligan had 10. Alexandra Goldman had six and Gira had four. Goldman had one block solo and four block assists. Gira had two solo blocks. Nina Baek had one solo and two assists.

Ford and Connor had 19 digs apiece. Hunter had 11. Kohler had 23 assists and Goldfarb had 14.

In the first set., Buffalo State jumped out quickly, then was able to seize the win by scoring the final five points. Rochester won seven of the first eight points in set two. The Bengals fought back to within three, but UR scored the last three of the match to even it at one game apiece.

Momentum shifted both ways in set three. Buffalo State led, 11-3, but Rochester kept pushing and finally tied the score at 21-21 and then 24-all. From there, the Yellowjackets notched the last two points to open a two-to-one advantage in sets.  The final set was decided by Rochester's 10-2 run down the stretch which ended it.
