GENEVA, N.Y. – When the ball goes in, it cures an awful lot of ills. Rochester had trouble getting its shooting game in sync and as a result, lost its opener at Hobart College, 87-70, on Tuesday night.

The Yellowjackets hit 42 percent of their floor shots (29 of 69) and made seven of 22 outside the arc (32%). That wasn't enough to counter Hobart's sharp shooting eyes. The Statesmen hit 52% from the field overall (28-54) and from beyond the arc (17-33).

Hobart had the advantage of a game under its belt. The Statesmen defeated Keuka on Saturday. This win boosted them to 2-0. Rochester is 0-1 and heading for its home opener vs. Keystone College on Friday night in the Chuck Resler Invitational.

Sam Borst-Smith led four Yellowjackets in double figures. He had 19 points and five steals. Zack Ayers scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jared Seltzer had 10 points and five rebounds. Freshman Michael Mangan scored 14 points (he hit a pair of treys) and scrapped for six rebounds. Jacob Wittig, another freshman, had nine points and three assists. Mack Montague scored six points.

Hobart's Jamal Lucas led all scorers with a double-double, 23 points and 15 rebounds. The Statesmen had three others score more than 10 points.

Rochester scored the first two baskets of the game for a 5-0 lead. Hobart went on a 16-0 spree over four minutes. The hosts knocked down three three-point shots and Lucas converted a traditional three-point play. It was 16-5. Mangan drove for a layup (16-7) and Hobart answered with another burst, fueled by a three-pointer and a dunk on the break. It pushed the lead to 14. Hobart led, 45-27 at the half.
