HENRIETTA, NY – Senior captain Michael Sergeant scored with just 28 seconds remaining, breaking a 2-2 tie, lifting the University of Rochester men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over RIT in the 4th annual Hillside Community Shield Match at Tiger Stadium on Saturday evening.
Â
Sergeant put in a ball after a scramble in the RIT box following a corner kick with under a minute to go. The initial corner was taken by UR's Zachary Kanaley and afterwards, the chance was kicked around by freshman Patrice Dougé to the senior who tapped in the game-winning goal, the first of his career.
Â
The win moves Rochester to 3-2-1 on the season while the Tigers dropped to 2-4 on the year after the heartbreaking loss.
Â
UR would score the only goal of the first half at 21:37. Senior Tyler Buck would rip a low, hard shot into the back of the box after a deflection, putting the Yellowjackets on top early.
Â
Rochester would end the first half with an 8-5 edge in shots and took a whopping 12 corner kicks to RIT's two in the first 45 minutes.
Â
The Tigers would shock Rochester 15 minutes into the second half, scoring two quick goals about a minute apart to grab a 2-1 lead. The first score came at 60:44 when Akram Meza was slotted a pass up the middle of the field from teammate Gene Sicoli. RIT would then jump ahead 67 seconds later when Sicoli scored on his own, lifting a long shot from the top of the 18 yard box into the back of the net.
Â
The Yellowjacket's would answer though, tying the score in the 79th minute when junior transfer Alessandro Incerto headed in a free kick by teammate Brendan Kelly, setting the stage for the late game dramatics.
Â
In goal, UR sophomore Redd Brown made two saves in the victory while RIT keeper Chris Dill made eight stops. Overall, Rochester held an 18-12 edge in shots and took 15 corners to RIT's 6 in the contest.
Â
The 'Jackets return to action on Tuesday at 7 pm when they play host to another cross-town rival, St. John Fisher College at Fauver Stadium.
