William Smith Edges UR in Upstate Cup Final

In the most storied rivalry in Upstate New York women's soccer circles, William Smith College defeated the University of Rochester, 1-0, on Sunday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The victory gave William Smith possession of the Upstate Collegiate Cup for the third straight year. It was also the 500th career victory for William Smith head coach Aliceann Wilbur.

William Smith, ranked No. 8 in the current NSCAA Division III poll, improved to 4-1-1 overall. Rochester is 3-2-1. In Saturday's semifinals, Rochester defeated SUNY Cortland, 3-2, and William Smith defeated Ithaca, 2-0. In Sunday's third place match, Cortland defeated Ithaca, 3-2, in a game which had three penalty kicks – all successful. Cortland made two spot kicks and Ithaca made one.

Rochester fended off constant William Smith pressure and received outstanding goalkeeping from sophomore Madilynne Lee. She had four saves (five of WSC's 12 shots were on goal). She made a terrific save six minutes into the second half to keep the game scoreless. WSC's Kara Shue burst down the middle of the field and a step inside the area, hammered the ball at the center of the goal. Lee punched the shot over the crossbar for a corner kick.

With less than 17 minutes to play, Sarah Olick-Sutphen put a through-ball into the middle of the penalty area and Lee raced off the line to dive on it, a step ahead of Shay Callahan.

Shue and Callahan combined for the goal, scored at 76:32. Shue took the ball down the left wing, cut to the end line and avoided a Rochester defender. She played it to the near post, inside the crease, and Callahan was there to rap it into the lower left hand corner.

Rochester was unable to push many players forward, using its midfielders to secure the middle and deal with the WSC offensive pressure. The Yellowjackets got their first good try at goal when Laura Cowie-Haskell lashed a 30-yard shot over the crossbar from 10 yards outside the penalty area. That shot came just 1:37 before William Smith broke onto the scoreboard. Attacks down the left wing and through the middle were constantly thwarted by WSC's Zoe Jackson Gibson.

Cowie-Haskell had one more chance in the final seconds. The ball was looped to her from the right side. She cut farther left, raced a step inside the box and fired right at Murray who made the save as the horn sounded.
