HENRIETTA, NY - The University of Rochester women's soccer team pulled an upset of the 15th ranked Rochester Institute of Technology, defeating the host Tigers 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
Â
Junior Lee Stagg scored the game-winning goal for the Yellowjackets (4-2-1) late in the first half and sophomore Madilynne Lee made seven saves to earn the shutout for Rochester. The loss is RIT's first this season as they drop to 6-1-1 on the year, spoiling their highest ever ranking in the NSCAA Division III poll.
Â
In the first half, RIT would generate the first solid scoring chance of the game at the 34:00 minute mark when the Tigers sent a cross in front, just missing a connection to what would have been an open net. Three and a half minutes later, Rochester's Margaret Lee went on a long run up the right sideline and found teammate Laura Cowie-Haskell in the midfield with a pass. Cowie-Haskell then fired a turnaround shot that just skimmed the left post.
Â
Lee Stagg scored the lone goal on Wednesday.Late in the first, Stagg would score the only goal of the contest at 43:00. She received a ball in the box off a cross pass from Cowie-Haskell and her sister Kim Stagg, eventually sending the ball into the upper left side of the net.
Â
Looking for the equalizer in the second half, RIT would gain possession of a loose ball in a scramble in front of the UR net during the 63rd minute, but Monique Polanco's shot was saved after a strong defensive effort on the play by the Yellowjackets.
Â
12 minutes later, the Tigers' Quincey Ornellas received a slotted pass setting her up for a breakaway, but couldn't control the initial pass, eventually settling for a contested shot that was blocked away by a UR defender.
Â
At 82:54, RIT really stepped up the pressure, looking for the tying goal. Elena Wolfe headed a long shot off a corner kick towards the right side of the net, but UR's Lee made a fantastic diving stop, punching the chance away, keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Â
After a Rochester red card with just over five minutes to play, the home Tigers would ramp up offensive pressure, generating three shots and three corner kicks over the final five minutes. RIT was unable to capitalize with the extra player though as the Yellowjackets hung on for the one goal victory.
Â
Overall, RIT held a 17-11 shot advantage and took 10 corners to just two for UR. In the Tiger net, Sienna Fisher played the first half and made two saves while Kelly Rogers made one stop in the second half.
Â
The next UR game is scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 29th at 4 pm at Nazareth College.
