UR Falls In Double OT To Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY - The University of Rochester pelted 25 shots at Nazareth College, but none could find the back of the net as UR would fall 1-0 in double overtime to the Golden Flyers in a non-conference women's soccer matchup on Tuesday evening.

Nazareth (6-1-2) got the game-winning goal with just 40 seconds remaining in the game from Danielle Wilkin who flicked in a header after a long left wing cross from teammate Rachel Dise.

Overall Rochester (4-3-1) fired 17 shots on goal, keeping Nazareth goalkeeper Allison Dobles busy, but the junior ended up with career high 16 stops in earning the victory.  Naz's Sarah Conroy also added a team save in the second half.

In goal for the Yellowjackets, sophomore Madilynne Lee made seven saves in the loss.

Nazareth had two solid chances in the opening 15 minutes, one from Michaela Soules on a header off a corner kick that was saved, the other courtesy off Conroy, but her shot sailed just high over the crossbar.

In the closing seconds of the first half, Rochester's Amanda Graboski launched a free kick into the box where it was headed just high by teammate Laura Cowie-Haskell.

At the break, Rochester held a 9-5 edge in shots, but Nazareth had earned three corners to UR's one.

In the first 90 seconds of the second half, Nazareth missed scoring a goal by mere inches as Wilkin got open past a defender that slipped, chipped a shot past Lee towards a wide open goal, only to see the ball trickle just outside of the post.

At 54:03, Rochester nearly broke open the scoring when Shayna Levy headed a corner kick up in the air near the goal mouth, but the Golden Flyers' Conroy was there to head the ball off the goal line, keeping the game scoreless.

UR's Lauren Pien applied solid pressure late in regulation, but was unable to break through for a goal.  In the 69th minute she fired a shot just high after a short corner kick.  Six minutes later, Pien and Cowie-Haskell had two chances back-to-back but both were thwarted by Dobles and the Nazareth defense.

For the game, UR held a 25-12 edge in shots while the Golden Flyers took six corners to UR's four.

The Yellowjackets next game is slated for this Sunday when they open up UAA conference play with a trip to St. Louis to take on Washington University in an 11 am (central time) kickoff.
