Offense Dominates in 6-1 Win Over Oberlin

The University of Rochester field hockey team put on a strong offensive output to defeat Oberlin College 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Yellowjackets (2-0) pounded out 51 shots, 37 of which were on goal on the Yeowomen (0-1) who drop their first game of the 2015 season.

During the first half of play, Rochester held a 23-3 shot advantage but Oberlin was within striking distance on the scoreboard, trailing only 2-1.  At 7:08, UR's Nicole Cerza opened the scoring tapping in a pass from the center of the circle by teammate Michelle Relin, giving Rochester a 1-0 lead.

Just under 10 minutes later, junior Callie Fisher doubled the lead to 2-0 when she slapped in a rebounded shot past Oberlin keeper Maggie Gossiaux.

In the 28th minute, Oberlin's Maureen Coffey capitalized on a UR misplay to get a breakaway opportunity.  Coffey's initial chance was saved by Rochester goalie Tara Lamberti, but her rebound attempt found the back of the cage to cut the UR lead in half.

The home Yellowjackets would take control during the second half, scoring all four goals to reach the 6-1 final score.  Fisher opened the second half scoring in the 39th minute shooting in a rebounded shot for her second of the day.

UR's fourth and fifth goals came quickly after one another in the 57th and 58th minutes.  Fisher nabbed her first career hat trick scoring off a penalty corner blast with assists going to Tiffany White and Sayaka Abe.  Less than a minute later, Claire Dickerson made it 5-1 Rochester after she scooped a loose ball in front past Gossiaux.

Kate Anagnostos completed the scoring at 59:40 after another rebounded shot off the pads of Gossiaux.

Overall, Gossiaux, who led Division III in saves last year, ended the game with 30 stops.  Lamberti made one save while relief goalie Kiran Sundaram also made one save in the cage for Rochester.

The Yellowjackets will next host Denison University on Sunday at 11 am while Oberlin travels across town to play St. John Fisher College on Sunday.
