Sophomore Olivia Denny scored the only two goals of the game as the University of Rochester field hockey team defeated Denison University 2-0 on Saturday at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Â
Denny scored twice off deflections, both coming in the second half, for her second career multi-goal game. The other came October 1st, 2014 against St. John Fisher.
Â
Both defenses were strong throughout, minimizing scoring chances on both ends of the field, especially in the 0-0 first half.
Â
Rochester (3-0) would provide the best scoring chances of the period, both coming off the stick of Callie Fisher. Both plays, one in the 10th minute and the other in the 21st minute were set up by great passes from teammate Michelle Relin, but Denison goalie Ellen Westfall made a strong play both times, breaking up the chances before Fisher could get a shot off.
Â
Lamberti earned her second shutout of the season. Also in the first half at the 23 minute mark, UR's Mimi Adar had an open net but Denison's Virginia Hamilton made a sprawling defensive save, laying along the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Denison's best chance came around the 25 minute mark when Hamilton and Elsie Humes each had point blank chances but were stoned by UR goalie Tara Lamberti.
Â
In the second half, Rochester looked to make it 1-0 with 31 minutes left on a penalty corner, but Courtney Dunham at the back post couldn't get a stick on a shot pass off the stick of Relin.
Â
Less than two minutes later, Denny would score her first of the day deflecting in a top of the circle shot from Relin to the upper right corner of the cage.
Â
Denison's Nicole Hubbard came in on Lamberti alone in the next minute, but UR's All-American keeper stood tall again keeping the Big Red (0-2) off the board.
Â
With 16:48 left in the contest, Relin careened a shot off the near post, just missing her second goal of the season.
Â
Denny would then add an insurance goal in the 56th minute tapping in a Sayaka Abe shot at the back post, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead.
Â
In the cages, Lamberti made five saves for her 20th career win, moving her into a tie for 6th place all-time in UR history. Westfall made six saves for the Big Red.
Â
Rochester's next game is slated for a week from Saturday, September 12th, at home against SUNY New Paltz, starting at 12 pm.
