FAUVER STADIUM: Rochester's conference opener in men's soccer was one of the most thrilling games played in recent memory with wide swings of momentum.

The game ended in a 3-3 double overtime tie between seventh-ranked Rochester and ninth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. The Bears had not allowed a goal in six previous games. Â Rochester allowed a total of three goals in its first six games.

Ben Swanger scored two goals for Rochester and nearly had a third when his shot hit the left post. The third goal came on a self goal by the WUSTL defense.
For Washington, Nick Knight had two goals and Grant Baltes had one. Jack West had two assists and Ryan Sproule had one.
Aidan Miller had an assist on Swanger's second goal.

The Yellowjackets jumped ahead quickly – on a penalty kick (after a red card to the WUSTL starting goalkeeper) and then on an own goal by the Bear defense. Washington regrouped and scored goals 20 minutes apart in the second half to tie it.
When Rochester scored with less than seven minutes left. Washington bounced right back, netting the equalizer on a header off a free kick less than a minute later.

And, Rochester had a golden chance to win at the end of the first OT, only to see it spoiled on a terrific save from Washington's goalkeeper.

The Yellowjackets took that 1-0 lead in the 15
th minute. A long ball down the right slot sent
Jeff Greblick in on a breakaway. Three yards into the box, he was hauled down by goalkeeper Daniel Geanon on a slide tackle. The referee red-carded Geanon and awarded a penalty kick. Nick Tannenbaum came in to play goal. A Washington field player left and the Bears were reduced to 10 men. Swanger converted the penalty kick for the 1-0 lead.

Midway through the period, Geoff Rouin attacked on left wing. His cross into the middle struck the shin of Washington's Chris Reiger and ricocheted into the left side of the net for an own goal.

At the start of the second half, the Yellowjackets had three chances in the first six minutes.
Zach Lawlor's long shot from left wing was saved for a corner kick.
Zachary Kanaley headed the ball to Greblick minutes later, but his shot was stymied by Tannenbaum. Six minutes in, Swanger headed the ball just wide right of the right post from the edge of the area.

Washington cut the deficit in half at 55:17. The Bears earned a free kick along left wing. West delayed, then hit a long ball to the back post. It struck a couple of people before finding Ryan Sproule. He redirected it to the left side where Knight rammed it inside the post.

Greblick nearly made it 3-1 with 23 minutes left. Kanaley flicked the ball ahead to him and his volley bounced just past the left post. With 15 minutes left, Swanger tried to poke a shot through a crowded penalty area. It struck the left post and was scrambled away.

West was in the middle of Washington's equalizer. He broke down right wing with Baltes in the slot. Baltes played the ball out to him, then kept going forward. West drove a low pass through traffic which Baltes turned inside the left post.

Swanger broke the tie at 83:27. Miller threw the ball in long and Swanger headed it to the top left corner, beyond Tannenbaum's reach. Washington sent its own supporters cheering less than a minute later. The Bears earned a free kick deep down the right side. West lofted it to the penalty spot and Knight used his 6'4" frame to head it into the top left corner.

The best chance for either side in the OT came from Rochester with 30 seconds left in the first period. Kanaley took a free kick from the left. He pushed a low ball in front that Greblick ran at and struck well. Tannenbaum read it all the way, dove low to save it, and pushed it out for a corner kick. Time expired before the Yellowjackets could get a shot off.

Patrick Conway made five saves in goal for Rochester. The Yellowjackets are 7-0-2 overall, 0-0-1 in the University Athletic Association. Daniel Geanon made one save in 14:43 for Washington. Tannenbaum had six saves in the remaining 95:17. WUSTL is 6-0-1 overall, 0-0-1.
