SPRINGFIELD, MA – With 38 first downs and 513 total yards, the University of Rochester had a glorious offensive performance. Unfortunately, host Springfield College was stronger offensively and posted a 70-47 victory over the Yellowjackets on Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Junior quarterback
Daniel Bronson returned from an injury and played very well. Bronson broke the Rochester record for TD passes in a game by throwing five: one to
Emanuel Calmar, one to
Kyle Allegrini, one to
Nick Perpignan, one to
Shawn Silleman, and one to
David Angie. Bronson's five TD output broke the existing record of four scoring passes. He tied that record last season in the home opener against Alfred State College.
Â
It has been done eight times in school history, starting with Bob Young against RPI in 1957. It was matched twice last season – by Bronson against Alfred State and then by
Justin Redfern against Union in late October.
Â
On the afternoon, Bronson completed 22 of 40 passes for 308 yards and the five scores. He was intercepted once.
Â
Springfield used its high octane triple option attack to rush for 624 yards and nine TDs. The 10th touchdown was a 38-yard pass early in the fourth quarter with the Pride ahead, 56-34.
Â
Jordan Wilcox led the Pride with 174 yards on 12 carries and four TDs. Hunter Belzo rushed twice for 160 yards and two scores. Jake Eglintine rushed 12 times for 111 yards and one TD while Drew Brown had 13 carries for 109 yards and two scores.
Â
Belzo had what was probably the back-breaker. Rochester used back to back TD passes from Bronson – 40 yards to Allegrini, 12 yards to Perpignan – to tie the score at 21-21. Wilcox finished a seven-play, 63-yard drive with a six-yard scoring run in the final minute of the second half to make it 28-21 at intermission.
Â
On the first play of the third quarter, Belzo took the triple-option pitch from Eglintine around right end, stutter-stepped past a couple of tacklers and bolted 69 yards to push the lead to 14, 23 seconds into the quarter.
Â
Rochester's record slipped to 1-5 overall, 0-4 in the Liberty League. Springfield is 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the Liberty League. The Pride are tied for second place with Merchant Marine (which defeated RPI, 16-13, on Saturday). Rochester plays at Union next Saturday. The Dutchmen are 1-5 overall, 0-3 in the league.
