Women Battle Case to 1-1 Double OT Tie

FAUVER STADIUM – Rochester scored an equalizer in the early stages of the first half and then parried with Case Western Reserve for a 1-1 double overtime tie in women's soccer on Sunday afternoon.

The Yellowjacket record now stands at 1-2-1 in the University Athletic Association and 2-6-5 overall. Case is 0-2-2 in the UAA, 5-5-4 overall.

McKenzie Runyan's goal in the 13th minute offset one by Neha Cheemalavagu of Case with the match just six minutes old. The Yellowjackets thought they might have the go-ahead goal in the 34th minute, but Lee Stagg's tip-in attempt from inside the crease was seized by Case goalkeeper Sarah Newcomb at the last instant.

CWRU had the better of the play in the second half and the overtime. CWRU's Kimberly Chen and Marley Praprost were the two main shooters. Amy Lindberg dominated the early minutes of overtime but couldn't find a gamewinner.

Among the attacking players, Kim Stagg, Paige Gloster, and Jorie Freitag each provided some challenge to the Case penalty area.

Sydney Melton, Shayna Levy, Megan Runyan, and Alyssa Raskind were all solid at the back. Madilynne Lee made nine saves on 26 CWRU shots in 110 minutes.

Case went ahead in the sixth minutes. Lindberg passed the ball out from right wing to Melanie Kukura who laid it into the path of Cheemalavagu. She took two strides, then drove the ball into the right corner of the goal from just inside the box.

Rochester evened it seven minutes later. From right wing, Jean Chakmakas crossed it into the middle of the area to Kim Stagg. She pushed it farther ahead on the right and Runyan poked it past Newcomb.

The Spartans nearly broke the tie with four minutes left in the first overtime. A long ball upfield was missed by Lee rushing out from goal. Just before it could fall at the foot of Lindberg with the goal open and three yards separating CWRU from a victory, Melton rushed in and kicked it over the sideline.
