POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Home standing Vassar College capitalized on its limited chances, tallying three second half goals to come away with a 3-0 victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.
Â
The Brewers (10-3-2) only could muster five shots in the entire game, compared to UR's 14, but finished those opportunities on three occasions to hand Rochester (8-2-3) only its second loss of the season, and the first coming in a non-conference game.
Â
Vassar's Tyler Gilmore scored what would be the game-winner in the 51st minute, heading in a corner kick by teammate Hayden Van Brewer.
Â
The Brewers' Mattie Mrlik would score the remaining two goals of the game, coming at 67:40 and then at 86:49. In the 68th minute, Alex Gonzales and Reid Smith executed a give-and-go and then found Mrlik on the left wing where he finished his chance. With under four minutes to play, Mrlik scored his second goal of the game stealing the ball from the 'Jacket defense and beat goalkeeper
Patrick Conway on a breakaway.
Â
Early in the contest, the Yellowjackets had a flurry of four shots in a two minute span, but the Brewer defense stood tall blocking three of the four chances.Â
Zachary Kanaley,
Mitch Volis and
Lasha Alkhazishvili all had attempts deflected away and then a second Volis shot sailed high.
Â
Later in the half,
Milan Fatschel unleashed a shot that was blocked away by the VC defense, and a follow up header attempt from
Alessandro Incerto was then saved by Brewer keeper Adam Warner.
Â
With the score 1-0 Vassar, Rochester's
Geoffrey Rouin had a shot saved by Warner at the 66:43 mark and on the ensuing possession, Vassar would build the lead to 2-0. Late in the period, Rouin had two more opportunities saved by Warner who finished the game with four stops. In the Yellowjacket goal, Conway made one save.
Â
UR returns to action next Friday night with a trip to Riverdale, NY to take on New York University before completing the UAA weekend at Brandeis on Sunday. The Yellowjackets' final home game of the year is slated for Saturday November 5.
